Major project - formerly Scott P's boat. Strip down uncovered some poor repairs on transom, bulkhead and hull. Serious resto underway from ground up...

Bulhead damage and rot - entire cabin insert taken out which should save a great deal on weight.

Deck was screwed on/into oak rib which still looks pretty good.

It looks like previous owner ran over a shoal and just patched her together. There were 2 bronze plates midship on hull used as support for damage.

Getting a new transom.

Going with 007 red and white color scheme with Konrad drives and new 625hp Mercs.

Is this the 28 that was for sale in New Jersey 2 years ago?
Is the hull really 1" thick around the windows? That's heavy duty!

olredalert
12-28-2008, 02:53 PM
------The 28s could conceiveably be 1 inch around the window holes for some mounting area for the windows but they certainly arent 1 inch thick thruout. Some areas of the bottom and the transom would have been much thicker than an inch, but not the hull sides except in spots and for a reason........Bill S

:shocking: Now there's someone who really likes/wants his boat ! :D

If in fact you aren't already a glass expert , you will be when this is over .

I would have thought that the stringer system would have been a bit more elaborate than it is..

On another thread here, Dad's Thunder is doing a major restoration of his '69 Sportman. His is unusual because the deck over the engines is raised (factory original) so he is raising it even more and adding a sun deck cushion.

Thanks for the info and encouragement. I did not see any pics on the Dad's split deck restoration...

Yes, the fiberglass work is vast. The repairs to the hull at the bulkhead were done by pouring a ton of glass on the inside and scewing metal plates on the outside for stiffening:nilly:

Lots of scraping and peeling - will have more pics very soon.

What is the series of several hundred holes in the bottom? Were these used to through bolt the hull to the plates you mentioned.

Back in the late '80's, I restored a mid '70's 30' FBSF and changed out most of the bulkheads while still in the water. I have an inkling of what you're doing. It was probably in a little better shape than your boat.

Hard to believe - but yes, they are screw holes to attach the bronze plates.

When we first saw the plates we had many guesses one of which was to protect the hull where it sat on the trailer...

Thanks Scott - sorry I did not follow up on windows, but I will not be needing them as I plan on filling in the windows to make it as close to the original 007 boat as possible. It also cleans up the lines and makes it look much more sleak without the windows and bow rail.

Things are good, but the idea of a restoration this big put some stress on the marital relationship this summer...so I bought a 74' Cig 20 for another complete resto and a 69' Corsican that needs slight refreshing just to shut the ole' lady up and convince her I have lost my mind...

The real problem is dock space on the Grindsone Island...:boggled:

I plan on lowering the floor about 6-8 inches to add to what is really minimal freeboard in this model. The entire engine hatch/pad area will be automatic with access from the front so it does not have to over-extend in the cockpit.

Trying to figure out how big to go on tabs...there is so much bow flare and bouyancy, but extra weight in the back, so I am thinking 16-18 inch tabs will be good...

Back in the 60's Daytona offerred 427's with twin turbo's not sure what blocked it was based on. They were installed in sportfishing boats like rybovich and merritts, also in magnum----I don't know if they were ever used in stock sportsman.

How does you boat run with those motors?

Boat runs great seems to plow the water ! I am of the understanding that only 10 1969 Sportsman were made . I have been trying to find out more for years . I have askes Michael Aronow and alot of others from the Florida Seadogs to get more information with no answers. I bought the boat from a retired Doctor that was very into fast cars also. He was around Don Aronow with his cars . That is all that I have found out about for 9 years.

Congrats on mastering the avatar and picture insert thing. I knew you could figure it out.
The crews at Hopkins had all that snow we got this morning off the runway well before I got on the plane. All went very smooth on the way back. Chilly tonight in JAX. Temps hovering in the low 60's. (Just had to poke a little fun).
You and Jesse and Janet are welcome back any time. I really enjoyed going to Jesse's match this week. Thanks for inviting me.

MadPoodle,

I'm the one doing the work on Pat's boat and I appreciate your offer of the drill fixture. I ordered one from Merc but when it arrived it was just like the Bravo fixture I already have so I sent it back and tech told me they don't make a drill fixture for a TRS. If you do have one with 3 1/2" between the top bolt hole centers I'll take you up on the offer.

Thanks

Rick

Looks like a great project, I am nearing completion on my 1967. I pulled out the Crusader 330 and V-drive and have put in Cummins QSB 380's with ZF 2-speed (overdrive) transmissions currently coupled to Bravo 2 drive but I plan on B1 XR's. I also pulled the deck and interliners rebuilt stringers, repaired the chines, glassed the port hole but added new SS oval port holes. I also have made a custom bow pulpet, motor box, which you can walk around, teak swim platform, and some pretty cool seat brackets. I took pictures throughout the project planning to document as you have, just never made the time. Great Work!

Almost forgot the interesting part, I have had her in the water twice now. With the 2.0:1 Bravo 2 drives and 25 pitch props she runs about 43mph but my engines are only pulling about 60% load. I believe she will run just shy of 60 when I get a better drive / prop setup.

BUIZILLA
01-31-2009, 08:04 AM
Dano, my experience with those engines says that you are going to end up with 1.32 or hopefully 1-1 drives or that setup... in fact i'm repropping a repower on a 37' boat right now that has 2-1's and wish he had gone with 1.5's... we are at 22x26 props and still can't load the motors completely..

does Merc even make a 1-1 Bravo?

you'll NEVER get those engines loaded until you drop the ratio wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down, I had ZF 1.23's in my 35' Contender and that was only with 275hp each...

Dano
01-31-2009, 08:10 AM
The ZF two-speeds I have are 1:1 and 0.78:1. Am am running the 0.78 so the drive can take the torque as well as drop the overall ratio. You are correct, I need a max of a 1.5:1 ratio on my drives so I can select a reasonable prop.

BUIZILLA
01-31-2009, 08:21 AM
do you have an engine pic with the risers installed?

Dano
01-31-2009, 09:08 AM
I do not have risers, 5" wet elbows into custom 5" in 6" out water lift mufflers. The outlet on the muffler goes through the deck into 90° hump hoses, then to custom stainless tip shown in the previous pictures. I also show a shot of my helm seat bracket as it is being mounted. The seat brackets allow you to open the deck hatches for access to the tanks and filters without moving the seats.

I have been reading this since the onset, it is without doubt turning out to be a really super project, I have a friend down here on Long Island that is starting to go along a similar path with his 28. He is pretty set on big Volvo diesels and drives, I am going to mail him the link on yours I am sure it will inspire him even more. I hope to see your boat in person when I go up for the Donzi run this season.

Randy - I agree Dano's boat looks awesome and has some really great thought into the project.

Rick, owner of Northern Marine in Clayton NY, is doing my 28 with pics of stringer rebuilds and are not up to the mechanical side of things yet.

I just want to clear up any confusion and have really enjoyed seeing and hearing about other 28 projects.
