View Full Version : Repainting my 89' Z-22

DONZIZEE22

I am new to the forums. This is the second boat I have owned and first donzi, so I am fairly new to boating. The boat is an 89' Z-22 with a 454 Mercruiser and bravo 1 outdrive. I had to get rid of that horrible teal color but needed to go with something that went with the teal stripe that runs through the interior. I run a family owned paint/bodyshop in CT so repainting the boat was not an issue. A friend of mine did all the airbrush work and I did the bodywork/basecoat and clearcoat. So far all I have done is what you see but this weekend coming up I plan on spraying the bottom with white Awlgrip. So here is what I have so far: The lightning is done with house of colors paint

This is what the boat looked like last year before I decided to restore the outside of the boat.

The last time that happened with the lightning it took out my phone and answer machine. I will say that is one of the nicest lightning schemes I have seen.

Thanks guys, I couldn't be happier with the way it came out. I was a little worried with what the end product would look like but I decided to just leave it to my buddies artistic imagination. I have new chrome and black donzi decals that will go in the original position in the rear above that cluster of lightning on both sides. It will kind of give it the effect that the lightning is coming out of it. Can't wait to finish rest of the boat and take some pictures in the water next season!

More progress pictures. I epoxy sealed the bottom of the boat and applied AWLGRIP single stage urethane to the hull. This stuff lays out great and seams to dry fairly fast.

That's pretty wild. I love the traditional schemes but on occasion I like to see someone break out. That's a pretty cool idea.

What else are you doing to it? You can't leave that drive unpainted after all that. Any interior bling?

Thanks for the compliment, I am going to pull the drive off after I am all done with the paint on the boat and paint it. The top of the boat is going to be the same white as the botom of the hull. I am going to stick with the donzi stripe on the nose but do it in black instead of teal/green and have a big lightning bolt shooting down the front of the boat in the black stripe area. I will post up some more pictures in the next couple weeks of the progress. I am also going to remove the engine hatch, paint the underside black and do the lightning theme under there. The interior is pretty much staying the way it is until I come across some extra cash. Overall it is in great shape. I would like to have it redone in the future though. Heres a shot of what it looks like

They look pretty solid but I may take a closer look at them when I remove the engine hatch. I poked around last year with a hammer and everything sounded solid and looked good.

I hit mine with a hammer and the stringer was solid. When we drilled it we found it to be empty. same on the transom. look at some of my old Z29 post.

If the drive was replaced maybe they already addressed it.

You thinking about attending AOTH?

I will check them out. I mainly use the boat as a river boat so I am probably not going to get into redoing the stringers unless I have a big issue with them. The boat may see the ocean 2-5 times a year if that and I usually just go out the mouth of the river around the corner to the beach bar. I replaced the outdrive last year when I first got the boat and didn't find any issues around the transom. I would love to attend aoth. Gotta see if I can get some time off from work. What are the dates for this year?

I just checked the link, looks great. I just went up that way a few months ago for a friend's wedding. We had a couple drinks at the harbor town? restaurant on the water... my friend works for the hospital up on the big hill.

Looks like a great boating place

Thanks, Harbor Park is the place you are talking about. I spend most of my summer there. Great place to hang out and the owner has a huge firework display on the 4th of July. Everyone docks up and watches from the boats. He also holds some big poker runs every year.

Just a few updated shots of the new Donzi decals I put on. Got them off ebay for a decent price and appear to be the same as the ones that came off of it.

That really looks good watch it your going to give Macco a good name. BTW I had my old van don at one my friend who worked there prepped before it was painted- he said it was the key- 14 years later it was still nice. Its the hand not just the tool.

I decided to pull the engine and do some maintenance work before the 09' season begins out this way. I needed to pull the engine to put a new pan on the motor also. I found a pin hole last year in the pan and sealed it up temporarily with JB weld but was not something I want to stress about this year. It was only a temporay fix. While the engine is out I plan on replacing the plugs, wires, rotor, cap, sea water pump, water circulating pump, alternator, starter and I bought an aluminum oil pan. Also found that the steering lines were routed wrong by someone and were getting melted by the exhaust bellows. Today I cleaned up the bilge and inspected the stringers which luckily were all solid. I was wondering what I could use to clearcoat the bilge area just to restore the look of it and make it easier to wash down and clean. No looking to repaint it, I would like to re-clearcoat it with something durable against saltwater, oil and gas.

Anyone suggest using any certain brand or product??

Thanks Mark

Thanks, I just found this stuff on ebay. I'm going to give it a shot. Sounds like it is pretty durable stuff and they say it is chemical resistant. I will keep interlux in mind if I am not satisfied with the way this stuff looks.

Just so you know. Others may recommend other stuff, but that product has been around for years. My sister did the 16 Donzi in 1970 and it is still holding up. I did mine 8 years ago and am in the bilge all the time and now after the poker game Scott, Cliff,a d many others had in it at Lake George. I think I will re do it. BTW thank you everybody who helped me that weekend. Just so everybody knows, Never drop anything in the bilge with Lady Di around it starts to get real crowded in there as she DIVES into it to retrieve parts

That was after I cleaned it up with that purple power degreaser. I found a ton of nuts, bolts, springs, ect...... in the bilge and there was about a quart of oil down there.

It's pretty scary, chances are most of those nuts and bolts didn't go back to where they belonged if the person working on it was too lazy to use a magnet to retrieve them

I removed the frame that wraps around the top of it. I saw it done on a Z-25 and just liked the look of the all tinted winshield. I am going to install black door edging trim all the way around it for safety so no one gets cut on it.
