I remember in the 80's when the second generation of Supercars came out. I was a dumb teenager and loved the Countach, Testarossa, Esprit, RUF Porsche's, 959, etc....these were fast cars. The super high end one always claimed a top speed of over 200, although most never really got there. 0-60 times were in the 5 second range.

I saw the third generation with the McClaren, Diablo, etc... pushing these speeds faster, 0-60 in 4 second range and certified top speeds in excess of 200.

Now, I am abosolutly blown away by the performance of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Are you frickin' kidding me?????? 0-60 ceritfied at 2.5 seconds and a certified top speed of 254 mph!!!!!!! Quad turbo V-16 rated at 1001 hp (got to have that extra 1 hp):bonk:

Just loan me one for an hour...........

When will we see 0-60 under 2 seconds and tops speeds over 300.........

Wonder how that engine would do in my 16.........LOL:bonk:

Wow, 0-60 in 2.4 must be all wheel drive. The Crew cab can do it under 5 in 2wd, I haven't tried it in 4wd (I don't want to break anything)

Ford is saying in the 09 literature that the Mustang GT will do it in 5.1...

I call BS on that, I don't care what mag wrote it or who's driving it...

Wow, 0-60 in 2.4 must be all wheel drive.

Yep, 4x4.

Cost- 1,300,000.00

It also has the worst fuel mileage of any production car-

"According to Car and Driver, the Veyron's fuel consumption at 253 mph was 3.0 mpg (78 L/100 km). At full throttle, its 100 L (26 US gal/22 imp gal) fuel tank would empty in just 12 minutes 46 seconds. After 15 straight minutes at 253 mph the tires would melt."

Veyron video (Top Gear) for those who haven't seen it. It's one of my favorites. Take the "space" out of the link after .com.

You know, I've seen a lot written about the outright speed of the Bug, but I haven't seen anything about its handling.

Makes me wonder if it's not something of a one-trick pony.

BTW, McLaren's working on a new car...

Earlier this year, Road & Track did a top end shoot out at a Naval Air Station in California with a 3 mile long runway. There were about 15 cars entered, some seriously modified. They were to accelerate all out for two miles or until they reached top speed.
Hennesey showed up with a twin turbo Viper w/about 1200 HP on tap. It also had some sophisticated software to regulate power produced in the lower gears by limiting both turbo and throttle.
There was also a Veyron in attendance.
If I remember correctly, the Viper was the fastest accelerating, and the first to 200 MPH, and the highest speed.
Of course the Viper wasn't stock, but it was still about over $700,00.00 cheaper than the Bugatti.

Hennesey's Vipers are well known for big numbers.

Unfortunatly, they also have been known to go home on a trailer.

I still want to see the Bug at the 'ring.

Here's the PDF of the R&T test. There were'nt as many cars as I remembered.
Notice how the all wheel drive really helps the
Veyron on initial acceleration. After 100 MPH, the Viper is gone.
Also notice how many of these cars can't hit 200.
It's hard to get your mind around the numbers.

Supercars are nice, but some good ole American Muscle does the trick for me.

1994 Mustang Boss... 0-60 in 1.9 seconds
that's physically impossible... :bonk:besides a 135 trap speed against a 10.55 et flat out disproves the 1.9 claim to 60 mph claim... and since 135 trap speed equates to about a 9.85 et with absolute perfect hook in the high 1.30's for 60' numbers, a 10.55 equates to about a 126-127 trap speed with hook in the high 1.40-low 1.50 numbers, to get a 1.9 to 60 mph number requires a car to run 8.60's at 160 mph with 60' numbers in the mid 1.20's

and there ya have it :kingme:

Drag racing is just physics in action...Thanks Buiz - I thought that number looked a little hinky but didn't feel like trying to find all the math. Once upon a time I (sorta) knew that stuff.
