What is the purpose of the raised portion of the hatch (scoop if you will)when there is no corosponding cutout underneath?
What don't I see?

Not for me, but I've got a friend in the market. Funny thing is, he always gave me crap about the lack of interior space in Classics. Until he went for a spin last month. Now he wants one. He's got a for sale sign on his runabout now, and told the wife that if the kid's want to ski/tube, they can do it behind a Donzi. Somewhere there's a divorce attorney sharpening his/her claws.:jestera:

The 18C's of that era seem to have that configuration of hatch. My 94 is the same way! As to purpose????

Ken, if you look at both pics, there is an indent on the underside of the hatch.

Steve, I noticed that indent, but the hatch has no cutout for the "scoop" which has no cut out for an air intake. I am having a difficult time trying to figure out its purpose. IMO it kind of takes away from the lines.

Ken,

I don't believe it's meant to be any kind of scoop, but rather just clearance for the intake and exhaust risers (?)

The OMC powered boats just previous to that era came with 5.8L Ford engines (351c.i.) that for some reason were mounted very high in the engine bay (as compared to modern Mercs anyway). This hatch was developed to provide added clearance for those power packages. AMH bought Donzi in 1993-1994 so out went the OMC packages. The "bubble" hatch remained through 1996. In 1997 the hatch was redesigned and flattened, although a smaller molded "scoop"" was still incorporated into the revised design which is still used today. So now you know.

Steve, too be honest, love the boat, but my 18 dreams are slowly evaporating with the economy. I rely on tourism and the next 5 months are crucial. Going to have to put it on the back burner for now. Twins, building a house that is frankly over my budget, etc.... I hope my company does not become a casualty of this economy.

Good luck on the sale, nice looking boat.

I have two Ford powered 18's out my way they have the same raised hatch, looking closer I am pretty sure it was done to get the X higher for better performance. As we all know the Merc drives are set deep and steal a bit of performance, be nice if Merc or someone else manufactured a selection of shorter drives.

Was the X higher on the Ford powered OMC boats? Just curious.
