Forgive my confusion but..that has the thru-hub exhaust details and my 270 is the old style with the tail cone and solid prop hub..as I thought yrs all were too from your description and the pics of the other prop. What am I missing?
Thanks

this was the prop that was on my boat when I got it, the previous owner had it made by Spinelli to pull his wife skiing, I ran this prop for about 4 seasons without a problem on an older non thru hub vovlvo 250, from what I gathered Spinelli had a blank prop for the volvo sx at that time then tweaked the blades for the boat and the purpose of the prop speed or skiing bow lift stern lift and pressed the hub in for the old volvos, this prop ran on my 250 and a 270 no problem
all the other props I listed did as well with the correct thrust washer/ spacer
the prop is specifically designed to plane the boat and if i gunned it on my 16 I could stand the boat on it tail pipes right from the get go, with the tabs down it acted like a mastercraft, it was hooked up to the water I pulled my friends shoulder out of the socket trying to get his fat azz up ( not a joke that really happened) but it was not the best speed or rpm prop for hi speed cruise or keeping up with the big boys
the cleaver has the thru hub setup as well as it probably was on a merc before someone pressed the volvo hub into it

here's a pic of it on the 16 with the 250 if you look closely in the pics in the last post Spinelli pressed a michigan hub into it so it would fit the old aquamatics this pic is alil fuzzy

Thanks for the detailed explanation..and it sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. My 16 has a lot of prop and the engine is 'weak' below about 4500 RPM..so the combination won't ski a squirrel.
I've had my 16 for sale but am having second thoughts. I want that prop if I do keep the boat and that decision is only a week or so away. Hopefully I'll be back at ya shortly.

Matty,
Any of those worth a look for my new 1967 16 Ski Sporter? Volvo 290 outdrive with a 300 hp Volvo (Earl's old boat).
He wouldn't part with the "Griz Special" prop, so it has an unknown Volvo aluminum prop on it. I haven't had the boat in the water yet, so I can't give you any performance information, but I understand you are familiar with this boat.
Thanks.

the boat has a replacement Volvo penta performance 300 hp motor that went in when the 290 went on as a complete package. The outdrive is an "A" ratio which is a 1.3 : 1. spending sometime with Earl he had a few props like mine but he couldn't pull alot of them as they were to high in pitch for that motor drive package. You will have to stay away from anything over a 23 pitch or so as getting on plane will be a problem as Earl found out trying to spin a 26 chopper.
The spinelli would be a good choice . it is a 21 pitch and should let the motor get up into it's rpm range, it also planes very quickly it was designed for skiing and custom built by the Spinelli Brothers. The 23 alum. might work as well The 24 SS ultra will be too much but I do have a 22 SS ultra that needs a new hub the prop is in great shape just spun the hub that prop is $175

Matty, and anyone with a 270 v/p outdrive.
I am going crazy trying to get my 1974 16 ski sporter boat ready for the water - I have a bronze 3 blade that was definitely not made for this boat, the hub is about an inch less than the outdrive diameter, which I am worried will cause cavitation (the exhaust now exits thru hull) - although I have yet to try it, my guess is the pitch is a short 13-15 I 'll be lucky is I get to 30 mph. I will know when I open her up - the 350 engine has been modified, certainly looks good, but only trial will tell what she will do - I have 2 right drive s/s props which are absolutely mint. I have been "told" that they are hubbed for the boat, but somehow, I don't think so.
Is there a way to tell the pitch if it is not stamped on the blade? My thinking is a block and a piece of paper with a pencil attached to the blade (?)
My question is would it be OK to shift directions of the outdrive for the right hand blades I have (one is a michigan 24P 3 blade the other is a chopper 25p 3 blade. my concern is if they are designed to turn left, should I stick with it?
Thanks again for all of your help, which has been priceless.

I would run it with what you have first, get the serial number
off of the outdrive that will tell you the ratio of the drive hopefully no one changed the lower. the drive can be switched from lh to rh but they made them lh helm lh rotation for a reason the right hand rotation can be squirelly with a lh helm if the prop has alot of torque. run the boat get a feel for her before you go changing props my guess is it is a 20 or 21 pitch bronze prop which are pretty common on the volvos.
people will say that spinning right puts more stress on the upper than spinning left
I put a rh drive that was 35 years old on my 16 changed it to left and no problems so it spun right for 35 and now is still spinning left for another 5 years don't worry about it they are tough drives.
test it find the ratio and I have something that will probably work for you
Hi Mattyboy
Do you know where I can get a 22 ultra rehubed?:crossfing: If you still have one for sale?
I might go BOATING this evening and try my 24 ultra see if she will spin it or not.

I will check today i think precision propellor in newburgh ny can push a new hub in it, they need to press a michigan hub in it the original volvo hub was weak
if you go to moose head show them the 24 and see if they have someone they work with
ask moose head good thought.
Wish me luck with the weather and my 24.

Matty,
I have taken it out twice - The bronze Ellis prop lh is a 21 pitch which was made for an inboard as the hub is about 1/1/2 " smaller than the drive unit. It is a great prop, and pulls hard and right out until about 3200 RPM, when it seems like its run out of gas. What I think is happening, is I am cavitating and just spinning the prop. I have ordered a spacer for the RH props and I will see how they perform, but I am thinking 23 pitch would be about right. Let you know - DO you still have one?

I think a 22 ultra would work I don't have mine anymore but I think Penbroke here has one
just a quick note to all the new owners of older donzi's with older volvo AQ's you have to research the long hub/shaft vs the short hub/shaft.
with the right thrust washer( you need a few) the right prop nut or drilling and tapping the prop shaft for the bolt thru the prop cone
any hub will run on any shaft, all of the props i have are long shaft and they ran on both a long shaft 270 and a short shaft 250
so it can be done very easily

With my 16 I am pushing out a lot of HP thru the 270, do you think the spinelli would work?

That chopper would work good if you have enough horsepower to turn it 4800 to 5500. Ran one blueprinted by spinelli on my 1969 corsican with a 270 volvo turned it 5100 rpm. Friend of mine had one on his x18 donzi with a 400+ ci small block turning it 6500 rpm . they work. Spinelli worked wonders on these props but I heard he was closing shop

spinelli has been gone for a few years now
the 21 I have I spun to about 5500 I had about 310-320 hp
