Earlier this week I got a chance to do a short sea-trial and performance test on our first Marquis 50 SC.

This is the boat we displayed at Concourso Italiano in Monterey last month.

Triple Volvo IPS600's 435 hp ea driving forward facing pod drives.

I was impressed. A pretty good turn of speed, and also quite economical (relative to the same performance with straight shafts). Keep in mind this is a heavy 50' lux yacht...not a big sport cruiser.

For low speed / max range work, you can run it on one, two, or all three motors, so I tested a few different combinations to see what I would get if we were looking for max range.

The results are attached.

The 50 is a sweet boat. I have a 40 and a 65 here at our location. With the advent of IPS and Merc's Zeus coming along, the days of straight inboards are numbered. IPS-powered boats are about all that's selling well for us right now. I just came back from the Tiara factory in Holland, MI- a 435 HP IPS-powered boat has the same speed as a 600 HP non-IPS boat.

Cabo has a pod-drive convertible sportfish coming out and Tiara will, once Volvo gets a bigger IPS powerplant on the mkt.

We're pretty much ordering eveything with IPS these days as well.

I've got 2 40's in stock, but the 50 just feels nicer underway. Feels faster too although the speeds are actually similar.

I don't have any 65's left in stock (thankfully) but I have 1/3 of a 72 here...just the bridge. The rest of the boat (hull and superstructure) has been sitting on a couple trucks at the CA state line for almost 2 weeks now waiting on permits. Looks like they should start rolling my way about 4:00 AM Monday morning. Excellent timing considering we open our fall boat show this Saturday...

Guess what I'll be doing next week......:boat:

Looks like fun to me! Good luck at the show.

Don, that's outstanding single engine performance. At 1200 RPM, what would the range be?
I remember reading a bout a 60' or so Bertram that went to Hawaii on its own bottom using some fuel filled bladders on the foredeck and ****pit.

Didn't you have one of these boats there in March?

George- 506 gallons of fuel, so theoretically you'd have a 1555 mile range to empty.

In reality though, this test was done on near-flat water with only 2 people aboard, light fuel, water, and gear, and near-new bottom paint. Subtract some reserve fuel, and adjust for more normal operating loads and sea conditions and I'd say a more usable range figure falls to something like 1200 miles.

Still, since range was not exactly when they designed this boat, that's pretty good.

The boat you saw here in the spring was a 40' version. Looks very similar although it's a 2 stateroom/twin engine where the 50 has 3 of each.
