7.4 mpi Timing

I need some help. I'm probably just dumb. Can someone please explain the procedure for setting base timing using the Rhinda scan tool. When I put it in service mode go to base timing on the screen and move the distributor it doesn't seem to change. I know it obviously is by the way it runs.

Dumb question, only because you didn't elaborate on what procedure you are using, are you using a timing light?

After putting the engine in service mode, the timing will stabilize along the timing mark. Now when you move the distributor, the mark will move. You don't set the timing by the scan tool, you do it with a light. The scan tool only puts in service mode so you can manually set the timing just like any other engine.
