Check out the HP 525 ad in the classifieds. I think that's the same hatch and it has a pretty good under shot from what I remember...

Okey Dokey boys and girls;
Here's the deal, the TR as I bough it had one of the biggest, tallest hatch scoops ever known to man. And as it was set up, it needed the height. There was absolutely nothing subtle about it.:eek!::eek!:
http://www.donzi.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=29909&d=1183139246
The other day it came off the hatch w/a little persuasion of a hammer and chisel.
I like the Aronow Edition hatch. It's still a little large for my tastes, but it's OK.

Rustnrot posted an outfit in Tampa that makes a much more subtle hatch that's pretty good.......

What do you guys think?

I like the scoop, similar to Harbormasters.

But... Considering the amount of work you have already done, and knowing you can pretty much do anything:

Why don't you split it down the middle and make it wider, then fair it into the hatch smooth. What I'm thinking is a really subtle shelby style hatch.

On the other hand, why not dump the scoop all together? are you running a blown engine or? Considering the carbed HP 500 fits under the 22 hatch you should be able to fit just about any N/A engine in there with the right intake and arrestor.

Actually, I have two hatches...one w/a hole in it and one w/o. So I can play w/it all I want.

I'd vote for the 3rd scoop if you have to have one. Otherwise I'd go without one.

I like the scoop. I may be bais tho....I used a 69 mustang scoop

A scoop that I considered using was a 05 mustang shaker.

http://www.mustang50magazine.com/techarticles/m5lp_0604_2005_ford_mustang_shaker_hood/index.html

I thought it would be cool to have a shaker style hood on a boat

George,
You have the best of both worlds since you have an extra hatch. It seems you are trying to make a subtle scooped hatch as Vette said. Although the Aronow scoop looks good to me, it also states that there is a powerful engine under here. I like your scoop that sort of flows out although the one that Harbormaster installed looks good, too. Since you will not have a center stripe down the hull, it sort of changes things a little. I think you are making a good choice as long as you are not installing a powerful engine in which case I would thing a larger scoop would be in order.
My 1971 18' came with a fairly large scoop facing backwards (link to picture below) - the only one I have seen to date. I will keep it in my restoration since it is original and looks pretty good to me. Bill

My .02 would be to use a scoop with a hole in it that is as small as you can get, cool air feeding the engine has to be a good idea, otherwise don't use one at all. I like the looks of the bule one if it is open to feed air to the engine. The large oversized thing you had on there looked way out of place to me too :eek!:. Steve

My engine is basically a Merc 420 but w/9.8:1 CR, so it may be in the 450 HP range.....I'll probably never know for sure.....but it won't be any slouch.
I'm a subtle sort of guy......that's why I picked a RED boat....hahahaha!

I guess I've made a commitment;
http://www.donzi.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=37882&d=1218826670
Notice in the pics that when they installed the old scoop, they cut a groove in the hatch approximating the outline perimeter of the old scoop.
So cutting the new opening really saved me a lot of time, and did away w/a lot of the groove.

I almost used a mopar 6 pack scoop instead of the one I used.

(The resemblence of the one I ended up using to the shelby scoop was by pure accident.)

I think you should do a scoop off of a 65-66 Shelby GT 350 and either rivet it on or blend it in. That would match the lines of the boat better than a scoop with sharp edges. I do like the 69-70 mach 1 hood scoops, however they have the indentions in the back for the turn signal indicators. They would need to be filled in my opinion. Unless you put red LED lights and used them for cool little trailer light stop lamps! OOOOOO do a "shaker"!

That was of course before I saw the pic of your new hole in the hood! That looks like a mopar hood scoop. It has nice smooth lines and should look good when completed.

George, I know you are already committed but I'd have ditched the scoop altogether if the AE did not come with one. That raised scoop is raised for a reason. That's where the air is. The flush scoops will give clearance but not air, there may actually be a vacuum there. That's why cowl induction scoops work on cars. If I add a scoop it'll probably be the Teague one which is similar to your original but only 7.5" tall. I'm partial to that aluminum fairing too:wink:! BTW, the Mustang scoop that HM used is available from www.mustangsunlimited.com (http://www.mustangsunlimited.com) . Look at part #s QF19005 & F2602. Actually just search "hood scoops" and you'll get tons of bolt on ones. Anyone looking for any Mustang parts, they have it all, any year.

Here it is after sanding it w/some 80 grit.......now all I have to do is fill a few chips and it'll be ready to gel.
Notice I sanded off the gel on the vertical edges.
Anyone want to guess why?

Anyone want to guess why?

There was barely enough lateral clearance on the hatch as-is... would have been too thick if you laid more gel on there?

Or, Minicraft couldn't keep up with your demand for red gel, so you're having to go with a "natural" fiberglass finish...

Shirley you're going to fill in the holes where the old lifting struts attached to the hatch and glass in a block of wood to secure the new struts :crossfing: That always bothered me on my 22. If you do I won't call you Shirley again...

Actually I like the brackets. It gives it a clean look on the bottom.
I can always powdercoat the topsides of the brackets. No one will notice.

I may be a little biased but I like the scoop that came with the boat. It's functional but if the new engine doesn't require the clearance go with the flat hatch.
