I know where there is another real nice one, but it is currently tied up at the repo depot with the bank needing a complete sobriety check on its value.

I like the red on this boat.

------The owner sounds reasonably straight and honest. However, all 21GTs including the one I bought new were left-hand drive. Nice boat and the all red combo is an eye-catcher. This would be a nice, easy resto for sombody unless they chose to steriod it all up with massive HP and overpower the Volvo. A change to a 280 T or 290 drive for trim-ability and about 350 horsies out of a nice stroked 302 (about 348 cubes or so) would work really well. Would tend to keep the weight down too.........Bill S

I emailed him to see if we could make a deal for a little less. Even if it is a Classic Donzi, it still needs TLC and a long block. I was thinking if putting my setup out of the 16 in it. Merc Alpha, 355 CID 370 horse engine. If he was getting 56 at Tahoe at 6000 ft on a 1971 stock 351, then my setup should push it over 60.

------DW,,,From experience the GT21 was just on either side of 50 with a bone stock Volvo/351HM combo. A close buddy had this exact combo. That would be stock right down to the aluminum prop, so maybe a bit better if they ever played with props. Trimability would make a huge difference on this boat. The one I bought new had a 427 Merc/#3 combo and was good for right around 62/64 at 4500 and it had trim, of course. Back in 1971/2 I didnt play with props and stuff. I thought the factory did that stuff!!!!!....Bill S

Bill,
His motor must have been built a little stronger than stock if he was getting 56 at 6000 ft. Could have also been speedometer speed. How many hp was the 427 in yours?

I decided to e-mail him and tell him if the boat did not sell maybe he could let it go for a little less knowing I would restore it. He said he would keep me in mind. Said he had been to JH a few times. Seems like a real nice fella. If I had not re-powered the 16 last month, I would have bid by now.

------I couldnt afford the big HP guy, so as I remember the HP rating was 325. I would be remiss if I didnt say that the combo was pretty much bullet-proof. The #3 drive was probably better suited for something Navy oriented and the engine, as I said was only turning 44/4500 rpm. Mucho weight though. I remember the boot-stripe being way below the waterline at the stern.........Bill S
