Ok, let the debate begin...

Start naming cheap mods that I can do to gain some speed...

the slate is clean, starting from scratch, stock 330 Hp merc Borg warner transmission, TRS drive, Mirage 48-13702-21 (14-3/4 X 21) SS prop...in a 1986 Hornet III...

What would be a reliable expectation of speed with slight mods...and what are those mods : )

Not to be a downer, but something I learned when building my engine,...

Cheap, Fast, Reliable, pick any 2

There are things that can be added to improve performance, but even a good set of CMI's are gonna cost quite a bit,.....

Just my .02,... if you do find something cheap, fast and reliable, let me know too for when I get my next one :D

Ok, Ok, I guess I asked for that...

Well I found the trim tab mod...that sounds cheap, reliable, and it will be faster then before : )

I may be out of my element here, my previous boats have all been cruisers, just hoping to get pushed in the right direction here...

So yes, the CMIs cost a fair price, but in reality they are cheap speed, all things considered...are there other options? Anything ha to be better than the 75 pound logs I've got now : )

Any opinions on the prop?

Cheap speed is an oxymoron! :D

There was a post on OSO about a 330hp build-up. They did a cam/intake/carb/exhaust swap and I think they got 420hp or so. IMO the CMIs would be overkill for the price. A good set of Revolutions, EMIs, IMCOs, etc would work fine in that hp range.

I have read of a few other builds that were in the 450 range with different heads. Here's one:

I have close to 6K in my on the mild side 383, gained 4.5 MPH. Yes I could have gotten quite a bit more HP but I built it for max longevity and good all around power, to me it came out great.

Exhaust, play with a few props, put gas and oil in it and enjoy it until you need to rebuild then do something then. If it needs rebuilding now then do it now or buy a drop in motor and replace, I think there's a pretty stout small block in the classifieds still for sale. Steve

I agree. procharger.

exhaust, HP for dollar, is a crappy mod... especially on a stock or mostly stock engine. Better exhaust will outlast the stock exhaust so they pay for themselves over time.

I also agree on buying a drop in motor. That can be the best route many times. You can pick up a 502 mag/496HO pretty reasonable and keep your motor for a back-up or sell it. Much quicker to swap too! :D

Did the 330 HP engine have peanut port heads?????
If so, maybe some large oval port heads, cam, carb, and exhaust.
You could do the work in place.

Thr cheapest bang for the buck is a prop. that hornet exhaust is pretty bad, if it is stock it is a rear exit not center rise in either case they are not good. The exhaust would be my second mod because if you modify anything later you will need one then anyhow. In the mean time you will get better fuel economy and maybe better speed.
