I know many of You fellow Donzi fans also like Magnum Sports. This Howard is a baby Magnum in all that matters, ride looks and build quality. My friend Steve doesn't have to many photos of his pride, but plenty of film. I'll see if I can get him to put up some Youtube fotage of his boat in action. 'Till that happens I post a couple of pictures of the only outboard Howard 23 Offshore I know about. It's owned by a well known guy,Tony, in boating circles out on Long Island NY. His photos shows the great lines and sharp entry of the Howard Offshore hull. Call Steve, if You take her out, You'll buy her!

Nice. The Howard Offshore was on my short list when I was looking. If I was going to buy new, I'd probably get one made. Apparently they still have the molds but only make to order.

did the outboard boat ever sell?

No Jim, Tony was thinking about selling it in spring of 2007, but after the fortune he later spent on the re-power with twins, it's now a keeper. I don't blame him for being possessive, these are great running boats of exceptional build quality. 23' length with only 6' beam and 24 degree v-bottom make them handle the chop beautifully.

I was seriously thinking about buying the outboard when it only had a single on it.
I regret that I did not.

Got to agree Eugene. It was a nice little set-up with the 300X on it and that it was on our side of the continent would have been a nice little trip for You up to Washington state.

P.S. Where's Your Magnum now Eugene? I really liked all the incredible work You did to that one. D.S.

The Magnum is still around the San Francisco Bay area.
The new owner uses it only about twice a year.

Give my friend Steve a call, 818-984-7464.
With a 6 month old baby girl in the family they're getting a larger daycruiser. Unfortunately the Howard needs to go to a good new home. This is a lot of boat for the money and Steve is open to bids.

The quality a Howard is pretty amazing. I have the sister boat which is a 1987 Warlock 23 Offshore. Someone will get be very happy with the purchase of this Howard. They do not come up for sale very often.

NEW PRICE $16,900.
That's pretty much it though, says my friend Steve. As You said Greg, this is a rare opportunity for someone who know what this really is. Schiada, Howard, LaveyCraft and Eliminator. That's pretty much our pride here on the West Coast. Build-quality and custom all the way, it just doesn't get better than this!

the boats look like they have a wide flat pad at the rear of the transom?? looks pretty wide, sorta like a velocity? Not a deep v all the way in the rear like a cigarette or such. I guess that helps in top speed obviously and getting on plane.

The pad on the Howard Offshore 23 is not as wide as it looks, but has a longer delta shape. The 23' boat actually has a 6' beam, so it's a very narrow hull. I've been told that the entry is deeper than 60 degrees and that midship she's got more than 30 degrees. The hull was originally designed for offshore racing with a single outboard that was rigged on pretty extended gil-bracket. The boat shocked everybody with a second overall on the shorter course at the 1985 Rum Run in CA. It was beaten only by legendary Al Stoker who ran his 26' SST with twins. Greg Briles had just created this 23' Crusader and there was no name for the model yet. It was later named Crusader 23 Offshore and the mold eventually was bought by Howard Custom Boats in the late 80's.

P.S. In the photo Mr. Briles is out testing in the original Crusader design in

1985. D.S.

Howard was (and still is) known for the gelcoat and build quality. I am amazed that this has not sold. They model is not well known but the ride is amazing for the hull size and the buyer would have a very unique ride.

Thanks Rick, now I know. Asked Steve to send me some more photos. But haven't got any more photos from Steve, so I posted this that I got from him with the others, but first past on it due to the darkness. Well saw You once fly by at Parker and You were moving pretty good. How long have You had Yours? What year is it?

Best from Lars.

Who's Rick? Mine is an '89. I believe it is either the 1st or 2nd one Gene built. I've had it for about 9 years now. It is pretty much original except for a few things I've added. Hasn't even had a valve cover off of it and still runs great. Not bad for a 20 year old 454 mag.

Great to hear that she's been good to You. Seeing You at Parker I was curious to find out who owned the 23 Offshore and somebody said the guy's name is Rick, but I guess they were wrong. I always get excited when I see a 23 Offshore since so few were made. It's amazing how time flies, very interesting to hear that Yours was one of the absolutely first made and as early as 1989. Guess it was built in the Irwindale plant then. Cool to have You here on the Donzi Forum and if You know of any more 23 Offshores it'd be great to hear about them.

Best regards, Lars.

Hallo Greg. Well I thought the first year of production for the Howard was probably 1990, but it now shows that 1989 is the year. However the design was as above mentioned done and the first Crusader built 23 Offshore was made 1985. I've seen quite a few 1987 Warlocks like Yours, but can't recall seeing any earlier Warlock 23's. I don't know that much about the Warlocks, but been a huge fan of Gene and Mike at Howard these 20 years. Really like the 23 Warlock, the 24 Worldclass Euro and of course the 29!

P.S. How long have You had the 24 OB and what's the history of Your boat Greg? Little bit of an OB fan myself, even though I got a Larry Smith Kaama drive boat too. D.S.

Here is a photo of the 1987 Warlock. I have never been able to really get any information on the boat given it is a factory OB hull. I have seen several 23 World Class Offshore IO's come up for sale with BB power and the occasional 24 World Class Euro (one for sale now) but never another Team Warlock 23 OB.

Any info is appreciated Lars

We run it with a 1974 Donzi 16 OB as a little brother

Back to the Howard, here is a picture of a 1998 Howard 23 Offshore with custom gel coat.

I am AMAZED that your friends Howard has not sold. The Howard hull rides like a 22 Classic but is 10 mph faster with the same power. His boat is priced very well for the condition given the owner of the attached 1998 is asking $29,000 !

lars

:shocking:Funny You found that ad for the 1998? "Howard" NOT. If the owner of that boat realizes that he's got a Crusader he should advertise it as such. It might be a 1988 if he's lucky, probably even mid 80's. Boat looks clean, but not nearly the quality of a Howard. You're right about my friend Steve's Howard Greg, it's quite a buy.
P.S. Found his ad on craigslist.org too. $30K and the same misinformation! D.S

Lars,

Very interesting and yes that is the same boat! The owner is certainly representing it as a Howard. How can you tell that it is a Crusader or did you ask him for a HIN? Funny that when I first saw the photo and then the side windows I did for a minute wonder as I had never seen Howard do that.

Don't forget to let me know if you find out anything on my 1987 Warlock. I tried to engage the owner of WPM and get some background but he did not want to be bothered short of saying that the hull was a verified factory build.

PM me your email if you would

Lars,
That Howard deserves some current photos, between all the boats on this thread I can't figure out which one is actually for sale. One thing is for sure, a Howard 23 Offshore is a stealth hull and with that delta pad it is very efficient. Post up some high res current photos. This hull might be the last one out there of the (12) that were produced.

My Buddie Steve's 23 Offshore is one of the last ones made of this rare Howard Custom Boat model. The 1989 that just sold is almost identical to this one in the color scheme, engine, drive etc. Most of these 12 boats made are still out there. An all white one sold 4-5 years ago in Washington State and I believe it was a 1992. Then Tony on Long Island has got the twin outboard and another two outboards are supposed to have been made. I also looked at the original brochure boat and probably the first one made, when it came up for sale about 6-7 years ago, next door to Steve in Valencia CA, but it's in a pinkish main gel color, another 5-6 accent colors and the boat was quite faded and a little worned out, so I passed on it. Gene the owner of Howard had a couple made for himself with serious power, but the boat is too narrow at 6' to handle it and the hull mold was never totally straight, (they bought it from Crusader). He said it's better as a cruiser running 50-70mph and after spending a little time in this one I really tend to agree. A 28' Bullet is the way to go for tripple digits, but then we're talking quite a bit more $$$.

Your hijacking someones ad for a Howard Offshore to push a Warlock? :(

Not a problem if you know he's sold the Howard, but I don't see a posting saying he has.

8 years later and bringing it up from the archive. Here is another Howard 23 Offshore that just came on for sale for $17,000. 1 of 12 built by Howard Custom Boats.

Last time I saw this example was about 15 years ago with her then owner. He had a small company which did was work for the movie studios. Lived in the North Hills of Valencia, California, 10 minutes from Howard Custom Boats itself. Remember that the owner, who was in his upper 50's had a copper colored 1963 Corvette split window coupe, that had belonged to his recently deceased father, and the ashes of His father was in an urn of that Vette. The boat's gel, and anodized hardware were pretty faded by the sun, but the owner said that the motor, and it seems to be the same still, was in really great condition back then. Perfect little boat for Lake Tahoe where it resides now.
