My wife and I (of 42 years) like to have Hot Dogs once in awhile...maybe twice a year.. Hot dogs are BAD for you. ........but we remember the old days and will make an exception for a holiday. We really like the "New York System" hot dogs. I'm not sure if that's the same as "Coney Island Hot Dogs".

At any rate, we have been trying..twice a year..and have not even come close to duplicating a "New York System" hot dog at home.

Anybody got a recipe for this? The Sauce is the KEY. We remember the chopped onions that have been laying around in a dish at room temperature for at least 6 hours getting .....aged. We also remember the sweaty guy who lined the hot dogs up on his arm while tossing the stuff into the rolls.

It's the SAUCE. Ideally, we'd like to find something simple..maybe in a can??

Any ideas? John :lookaroun:

Sabrett's makes some sauces that may help.

As someone born and raised in Brooklyn I can say as far as cart type hot dogs go or dirty water dogs as we call them they're the Sabrett kind. The sauce they use is the Sabrett hot dog sauce with onions in them and can be bought from http://www.sabrett.com

Living here in the midwest now, they call them Coney dogs which is so foreign to me because they don't even call them that in Coney Island! lol. But in Coney Island, Nathans hot dogs rule!

Anyways, if it's the sauce you're looking for that you get from the hot dog carts, that'd be the sauce you find in NY.

Hope this helps.

I could possibly say that I like hot dogs more than anyone else

the vendors obviously have the best dogs

as far as the actual dogs go, if you are making them at home the best would be Lester's Jumbo Dogs

they come in boxes of like 30
(awesome cold too Joe)

I named my dog after them

WOW: Thanks everyone for the tips. I had completely forgotten that term.... "All The Way". It's been decades since I had a Real New York System hot dog. I'm going to start looking for Sabrettes today.

The first time I ever heard "All The Way" was in High School. The next time I heard it was when someone said, ..and it was probably around 2:00AM... "Hey, Lets go for Hot Dogs". :nilly::nilly: John

I had forgotten the brand, thanks. Here is another goody. Taylor or Trenton pork role. I went to school with the owners son. One thing strange is I found Trenton pork role in BJs store in Cumming Georgia.

History of the "Coney Island" hot dog. Lafayette Coney Island has been a staple of my diet since I was born. Koegel dogs are pretty sought after around here as well.

We are able to get Nathans Famous Hot Dogs here in Florida. I have a small Smokey Joe charcoal grill that I carry on the boat. A grilled hot dog on the beach with an adult beverage...it don't get any better than that!

I like mine with mustard, chili, cheese, onions and jalapenos!!!
