What are people using these days for recording music sessions? What hardware, what soft, what mics? Is there some sort of set? Or more specifictly a package I can collect together using a PC or a Mac so a garage band can make a half decent music cd.

My brother is quite involved at the 'amature' level with recording and performing. I'll contact him about what he's using these days. The only gear I know he uses is ProTools editing software (he build a dedicated PC for it a while back). I also know he's a big fan of Sweetwater Sound as his main supplier of gear - says a lot about their customer support.

My wife Elaine is the choral director of the choral group of the country club comunity where we live.....not exactly a garage band.
But, we use an Event Electronics EZbus digital mixing board which accepts MIDI, and conventional inputs, 8 or 10 in all (I think) and records to a computer via an USB port. It seems to work well with Cakewalk and other composing and recording packages.

Thank guys, but what I really need is a list of things that work to collect up and send off to my nephew. He's in college and pretty good at making music. This is to be a birthday present, to supply a workable recording studio. Not high end, just something to get started with so he can put out a CD.
The nephew said he needed a "Loop" for his ax. What's the best loop for an ax? Being a nerd, I'm a little out of my element here.

I'm looking for people that are in a garage band and what they are using.

Sorry, here is another software post... but Mac has a program called, you guessed it, "Garage Band." Supposedly it's a decent starter program.

I don't keep up with the new hardware, sorry... I'm rocking some Acoustic Research AR90 reference speakers with a Phase Linear 400 amp - All built before I was born!

A buddy of mine w/ a website and a few CDs also says to get Pro Tools LE. He uses Shure SM 57's or SM 58 mics. He also recommended www.sweetwater.com (http://www.sweetwater.com) as a vendor.

Party on Wayne!

Hey Cutwater - I've got a 53' Tweed Pro, a '66 Twin Reverb and a '61 Ampeg Rocket. If you really want to hijack this thread we can start talking guitars! Old gear rocks and so do old Donzis!

Agreed... I love old gear, and I obviously love old Donzis. My AR90 's are rich and true - much more 'listenable' than some of the 'high-end' stuff that's out there today. But I won't hijack the thread anymore .
