Anyone know the dimensions of the mounting studs on the sides of the merc elbows? Or, where I can get them? The merc microfiche doesn't show them as a seperate item.
They look like 1/4-20 on the outside, maybe 1/4-24 on the elbow side??, Length?? Having hard time getting studs out of the old exhaust, thought it would be easier to just put new ones in the new exhaust.

Thanks, Bob

Bob are you talking about the accessory studs for the pack and shift converter? If so I believe they are 14-20 both ends, cast iron does not hold fine thread very well.

Bob I am not sure but I think they may Loc Tite them, I never had any luck getting them out. I gave up years ago and just went to the parts bin, if I was in a hurry I would cut some bolt heads off and dress the ends down and Loc Tite them in.

Tried again, not budging. Will grab some 1/4-20 x 1-1/2 tomorrow.
No big hurry. Put engine in last night, waiting on alignment tool to finish the job, then I'll put on the exhaust.

Ah pretty close to start up time, is it a roller or flat tappet cam engine?

Gen VI, roller.

why do you ask, Phil?

If it was a flat tappet you need to spin it higher at initial startup to lube the cam and lifters, either one needs a few good hard pulls early on to set the rings. No engine like a babying break in, not saying to beat it but push it a bit don't baby it you will get better service out of it.

That is exactly what the engine builder said. Don't baby it.

i've never seen an engine babied on a dyno

a dyno is a water brake device

a boat engine and drive is a water brake device

IOW, run it as hard as you can

I have seen some that were babied, most turned out bad. One was an oil puker and the ruined a really nice Esky cam & lifter setup. Really the only thing you are breaking in is the rings.
