Some guy inhereted this boat and is selling it to me, the thing is he doesn't have any idea what model it is. He says it's a 23 footer from 1988, is it a Classic 22? Please help.

If is it a 1988 it should have a HIN on the back corner of the boat. Take a look for that. The number will tell you the model that the boat is.

Z21 It's the start of the Z boats

They are not in the classic series.

A question I've wondered about is if the windshield on the Z21 is the same as the Italian on the minx. It's set down a couple inches on the Minx because of the way the hull is built but they look exactly the same to me dimension wise.

Everything on the boat is original, but it's in pretty bad shape, he is asking for US$ 5,000.00, what do you think? The problem is I'm in Dominican Republic and there are not many Donzi's here, do you think it's worth fixing?

Looks like it's been sitting for some time.

Make sure you look everything over.

Good luck

I paid $6,000 for my Minx the seller had listed it for $5,500 But I offered him $500 more to steal it from some else who was bidding on it,The motor was seized. all the breakers were toast. I was able to salvage the short block and found some used heads. It listed last year in the blue book for About $9,500. $1,000 more with the big block. I personally would not take less than $20,000 for it.
The question is do you like it ?
Are you doing the work your self?
Does it run?
I think that $5,000 is the common ground for Donzi that needs work

If there's anything I have learned the hard way over the years- unless you are looking to spend $$$ and/or most of your boating season turning wrenches, I would hold tight and find one that is turn-key for a few grand more and spend your time on the water. I don't know how hard it is to import one from here in the States, but I would consider my options.

There are a lot of people out there that enjoy the restoration process and end up with awesome works of art and then there are people that would rather be just out getting skin cancer. I have an older X-18 and it is wouldn't win a boat show, but I have been putting around 5 hours a week on her cruising the Gulf and having a blast!

Another lesson I have learned is that, if you are going to restore a boat and put some green into it, pick one with a good resale value if you plan to move up after a couple years. I am not the one to ask about Donzi values, but it seems like a lot of the classics are good buys.

My $.02...

Good luck!

I think you'll have 20k into it when you are done. If it is worth $20k or more fixed up in the Dominican then it might be worth it for you. In the US the Z boats of this vintage don't seem to be worth as much as a comparable sized classic.

I also agree $15k is about what it would take to make it clean.

But if you are the type who loves to turn wrenches....
then the fun is in the getting there.

Old boats when mended can cost more then newer when ended, quite a few of us are up to our shorties but lovin it!

Apollo 24,
He lives in the Dominican Republic. I believe their boating season begins January 1 and ends December 31. :)

Run, don't walk. Trust me. It's better to buy a boat in good shape for more money.
