I just got a Stainless Marine crossover (beautiful piece... I really want to use it) to replace my failed circulation pump. The problem is, on my OMC setup, several accessories will have to be moved. 2 problems:

1) The upper-port mounted alternator is in the way. The SM t-stat housing won't even mount right now, much less any room to route hoses. I could get this guy
http://www.billetspecialties.com/item.asp?cid=4&scid=78&pid=141
I think it would work.

2) The current power steering pump bracket uses the circulation pump housing to mount to (won't be available when I switch to crossover). I could possibly use this independent mount
http://www.billetspecialties.com/item.asp?cid=4&scid=78&pid=516
but it is for GM Type II pumps, and I am not sure it will fit my PS pump, which is this one
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&group=548&GroupList=534,535,536,538,537,539,540,541,542,543, 544,545,546,547,548,549,550,551,552,553,554

What do you guys think? Is there a better way to do this?

Why not use a Merc piece like this one?
It combines both pieces on the same bracket.....in the picture, the P/S pump has been removed and the suspending chain is shackled to the adjusting slot.

You can get the P/N from Doug Russel and frequently find them on eBay....do a search for Mercruiser.

those billet brackets are nice, but holy crap $$$.

can you post a pic of how close you are to getting it to fit? a different t-stat housing may be all you need. It has to be cheaper to get a housing that fits instead of relocating half of your engine.

George, they want $330 for that bracket at Doug Russell !! :propeller: I'll keep looking on ebay, but I haven't seen anything yet. I'll keep looking.

By the way, will this bracket fit with my P/S pump?

is there room to rotate your alternator higher? you should be able to take off the left bracket and try it. if that buys you enough clearance all you'll need to do is have a machine shop cut you out a new left bracket that is longer.

I keep a search on eBay for "Mercruiser" under eBay Motors/boat parts continuously.....from there you can try several different searches. There isn't one for a small block right now, but there is for a BBC.
Just look for it daily. Expect to pay about $50.00 for it.
And yes, your pump will fit.
Just about anything you might want will come up eventually.
I waited about three months for my Gil risers, but it was worth it, $1,100.00 value for $160.00.

Look at the attached pics, won't go much higher. Third one is the alt at its highest. At highest point would still be in the way bc there is no room to go under or over, and the belt will be in the way going out. I think I'm done with my bracket setup. It's at the limits of its usefulness. Gonna go Mercruiser.

I found one (not on eBay) for about $130, gonna buy it. Can't wait till fall . Did the Merc engines use short or long water pumps?

I swithched to the merc/bravo style stuff. Bought it all on Ebay for around $200.00 including the P/S pump, but NOT including the pulleys. Had all the Merc brackets powdwecoated. With the pulleys, powdercoating, belts and the crossover I probably have about $500.00 in the whole deal. There are pics on this thread at post # 71.

Barry, for some reason, it just doesn't seem like the power steering bracket for the older model pump w/ attached reservoir (which is what I have)
http://www.jegs.com/i/Moroso/710/63895/10002/-1
will fit my P/S pump. Look at the bolt configuration, plus take in to account that the fluid lines run out the back of the pump as well...

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&group=548&GroupList=534,535,536,538,537,539,540,541,542,543, 544,545,546,547,548,549,550,551,552,553,554

Am I just being paranoid? Maybe this will fit?

Madcow, really nice! I remember seeing that thread a while back. Unfortunately, I want to be on the water next week even though I'd like to be able to find a complete setup on eBay. I just can't wait for it. But that's exactly what I want to do.

Found this one on Ebay, this is the style I have. Looks like it will work with that bracket. Now what are you going to do about the alternator

Crap.
Yes, that is a different bolt pattern than my pump. Looks like the bracket won't fit my pump.
No, I don't want to drop $170 on a pump while I have one that is working, haha. I think I'm back to buying the Mercruiser bracket, unless I can find a cylinder-head mounted P/S bracket that will fit my pump.

I just checked Ebay, there is nothing now. I paid $120.00 for my bracket and pump. The best part about the Merc bracket is it also takes the alternator.

I just bought a pump about a month ago for about $50.00 on eBay.
Ya have to be diligent (look several times a day, every day).

My Revolution Marine bracket accepted the P/S pump and alternator. When I installed the Gil manifolds, the alternator would not mount to the bracket. Gil manifolds are huge. That is why I had to install the low mount alternator bracket. My apologies, I bought the alternator bracket from Summit Racing, not Jegs. I buy from both and forget where I got what from whom...getting old...but not growing up!

Do a search there and see if you can find anything you can use.

Can you just flip the bracket 180 degrees so the alternator hangs to the right instead of hanging to the left? The 2nd bracket is the easier of the two to mess with. It looks like you might need spacers there though too in order to line it up right.

I can tell you that the merc bracket + stainless crossover doesn't work perfect either. I have to trim mine... I'll try to post pictures after work... I'm not done yet because now I'm thinking about upgrading the exhaust at the same time.

The alt. bracket is "shaped" on the outside, and lays flat on the inside. I unfortunately don't think flipping it over would work... After looking at other brackets, including the Merc bracket, I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a new PS pump because of the hose locations on the housing of my OMC pump. I might just be buying a new circ pump and giving up the SM crossover until later. I just need to be on the water soon!

The SM crossover I am testing with is different from yours - both tabs point downward.

You are correct in changing to Merc pump. My old OMC pump would not work either.

I'm glad your X over is better than mine. That is one less thing to deal with at least:)

Is the OMC pump different than the merc pump?

Thanks Barry for confirming my suspicions. I seem to run into this problem with all of the OMC stuff. :smash:

If anyone has old Mercruiser rigging they don't need, let me know! I'll pay more than you'd get on eBay .

I happen to have a waterpump  I'll take pictures of it this evening. If you want it you can have it for the price of shipping.
