I have been presented with a CJ-5 as a trade for a pop-up camper I have listed on craigslist. I listed it for $1750 - not really knowing what it was worth. Probably much less

What I know so far about the Jeep is this from the owner -

"it has the 304 v8. body has very little rust in it. it currently has a bikini top on it. i have a soft top and doors for it but someone took half of the mounting hardware. it runs good. tires are nearly new. 31 x 10.50's. the only thing it really needs would be a clutch kit in the future. the clutch is good but the throw out bearing rattles."

i just want you to know what you are getting. a 1976 jeep cj5 with 32 year old problems. motor runs great and tranny shifts out smooth. 4 wheel drive works great. other than that it needs some TLC!!!!

I'm inclined to go for the trade - I don't care to keep the camper and the Jeep could be a fun warm weather about town ride - I work at home unless I'm flying out of town and my main ride is a '02 Yukon XL 8.1 liter (3/4 ton gas hog).

What would a running but ragged '76 CJ-5 be worth?

CJ Mike would be the guy to ask on this one, however it is my understanding that the pre-1978 jeeps in this age group are less desired due to the fact that in 1978 things like front disc brakes and a beefier frame were added to the line up also something like bigger as in wider leaf springs came about as well. Maybe shoot CJ mike the question directly. Dont quote me on this it is all very fuzzy from my Jeep days 15 years ago. My first car was a 1978 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade.....loved it .

Jeeps of the era came with two engine packages, the 258 straight six (114 hp) and the 304 V-8 (in 1975 rated at 150 hp). The V-8 jeeps are more sought out than the 6. I would say he is in the ballpark @ $1,700.00.

I say do it! Just check the spring mounts on the frame. If they are solid go! You could put it back on CL and double your money!

Your thoughts are funny! I work from home as well and picked up a cj5 to beat around in rather than the Excursion!!

To answer your question $2500 on up!

I would say 1700.00 to 2500.00 with the V-8. Nice restored ones are going for 5000.00 to 15000.00.

Jeeps are hot in Texas. Its hard to get anything decent looking/driving for under about $7500.

It could turn into a bottomless money pit. The 304 is a good engine and so is the 4.0 straight six. If an automatic it will be a Chrysler trans. The transfer cases were a weak point and very expensive to fix. If it has front locking hubs they are another problem spot. If you see kinks in the bottom rear of the front fenders or kinked springs (the main leaf) then the jeep has seen air time. I would steer clear unless you plan to restore it. At least thoughly check out the mechanics. I was an AMC/Jeep mechanic for over 10 years.

I have a '76 CJ5. I'm second owner and have had it about 1o years. Mine has the 258 w/ 3 speed. I have been offered $6000 for it and turned it down. I would do this deal even if it needs some TLC. Parts and accessories are so cheap and available. I put a new Best Top interior in mine for like $700. Besides.... they are a heck of allot more fun to drive than a pop up camper

The 258 was actually a 4.2L engine and was produced from 1971-1990. The 4.0L inline 6 was a 242 cid engine that showed up in 1987.
