What is more cost effective - rebuild a '69 Holman Moody 351 and Volvo outdrive or replace it with a crate motor and outdrive (5.7 and Alpha)?
Thanks.

I bought my 383 mag/bravo with transom assembly for around $10,500 (great deal). Then had the transom rebuilt accomodate it. I would think that you could rebuild cheaper than that. You need to look around though, you might be able to buy a 350/alpha combo pretty cheap.

Rebuild the 351 and stroke it out to a 393 would get my vote. I currently run a 302 stroked out to 347 in my offroad rig and love it. A 351 stroked to 393 would be even more fun.

I vote for "keep it original".

And does that Volvo really need a rebuild? I had my upper resealed once in 38 years...

What is this engine in?

Which ever path you chose stock or modified I have always been of the mind to rebuild, two reason costs less and in my eyes most all independent machine shops go the extra mile to protect thier name. The drive is a no brainer leave it be, as to the engine I would ask around for shop recommendations in your area.

Tall, I have a brand new with warranty PCM GT-40 5.8L 310 HP efi fwc. Price would be LESS if you take the Formula Jr. hull WITH it.

Not enough info to give you a good answer. Lets start with the basics:

A: Why the rebuild on BOTH items?

B: Doing it yourself, or hiring it out?

C: If contemplating doing it yourself, how much do you consider your time worth by the hour?

A: If the Volvo don't need it - Bonus! Just an assumption...

B: Doing most of it myself. Have friends and facilities at my disposal.

C: In three years time will be free. Retirement (at least from the military).

'69 Cobalt GT-500 The one mentioned in "Other Boats for Sale" I'm going back to Texas in two weeks and may go take a look at it.

rustnrot - my flamesuit is on - This resto may be more my style - rebuild motor, repaint, hardware, electrics... Not quite as extensive and "graying".
