My brother had over 1000 hours when he pulled the original 454 330 out of his '87 22. It only needed a valve job at that time, but he had the need for more speed:yes:

I got over 3000 hours on a 1979 Merc 228, 305 4bbl. No rebuild ever, new accessories over the years, starters, alts, rebuild carb 2-3 times. New coupler, ujoints. Sank twice. Original exhaust tho, block never opened. Fresh water of course. still running well when i gave it away in 2005.

We stopped counting on our 1966 16 at 4800 hours when the first engine wore out.

How it is run is very important. My 305/228 spent 95% of its life under 3000rpm, pushing a 2500lb boat. The boat was overpowered and the engine was therefore underworked always. This added thousands of hours of life.
