I'm thinking of buying a Donzi.....I currently have a four winns U17. Great little boat with a EFI 5.0L ford...runs 62mph gps...all stock. I was thinking of getting a little larger boat 18 or 22 and of course faster...was wanting to know what speeds people are getting out of their donzi's and with what engine. Could you post what type of boat you have, engine type and hp, and if you have done any mods to it. Actual gps speed too. My boat gets a chine walk around 62, would probably get to about 65 if not for the chine walk, I have to slow down of course. Not worth me spending the money on another boat if there isn't much of a speed difference.....

I'll let others chime in about Donzi speeds but I have a ton of experience with the U boats. They are great boats!

Your U17 is a 62-63mph boat. The U19 with the 5.8 EFI is a 66-67mph boat. The 97s with Chevy motors were slower.

I don't know how long you have had the boat but you can drive the boat to avoid chine walk. I owned a U19 and if you just let it go it would chine walk HARD. Took me awhile to figure it out with some help from friends that had a lot of hours behind the wheel of the U boats. A quick "bump" of the wheel at the right times will eliminate it. You can PM me your phone number and I will be glad to talk to you about it.

As far as moving up a 22 would be a great move. The boat will feel much bigger and with a mag big block you should crack 70. An 18 wouldn't be much of a difference IMO.

syclone, I've got a 22zx W/7.4 mpi. Best speed, mabe 64mph. shows 67 on the speedo. I was clocked by radar at 57mph when my speedo read 60. The smoother the water the slower the zx is. The rare 502 mag will break 70, the 454 mag 67 gps. just run the bravo 24p 4 blade prop with 7.4mpi (bravo 1.50).

To get an idea of what speeds people are seeing in their 22 Classics, take a look here:

As for myself, box stock '01 classic, 502 Mag/Bravo 1/25p Mirage+ = 72-73 mph gps. And yes, it will chine walk with this prop when trying to find those last few mph. Others can tell you more about how to eliminate that issue.

My '98 22zx has a 502 mag which is stock except for headers. I get a hair under 76mph out of it running a 27" mirage. A little chine walk, but not bad. It used to be almost out of control but hydraulic steering took care of that.

what is the deadrise on the 22zx? just curious as to how it handles compared to a 22 classic? I know it's a larger heavier boat.....any good/bad about it?

The 502 Mag was rated at 415 hp.

Haven't seen much about the 6.2 in a 22. Would be an intersting combo though.

If memory serves me right there is a 6.2 22 down in Jims neck of Fla running a shorty that he said runs real nice.
