I was looking at a 1990 16c with a 4.3L and cobra outdrive. I was wondering what the max speed people were getting on this boat with the 4.3L.

Most will do low 50's, there are a couple that do a lot better. I am sure Mr. Name Change will jump in as he has a quicker 4.3.

Thats pretty good Phil. Yes, I now have a longer lasting name:smash: and the Big Green ZX belongs to CJMike.

MOP hit the nail on the head. The 4.3 takes a little extra to get it in the 60's. That is easily done though.

I will be campaigning to finish the blower setup at AOTH. I am thinking that a 4.3 Procharged or Vortec will see way up in the 70's. And it will be out of hand.

Heck, most 18's would be a handful in the 70's. A light 16 would be darn near airborne at that speed. Better be real light air and a very light ripple on the water when THAT run takes place. I'd also recommend even weight distribution between driver and shotgun.

Yes, my 18 is light in the 70's. The external steering helped it a good bit.

Remember that Rootsy got his into the mid-80's. Also, he didn't have any trim tabs. Said it scared him pretty bad.

I Ran my 408 in a 16 for a summer, It was wayyyyyy to much motor. high 50s to 60 was scary enough, mid 60's to 70 I Thought I should just jump out cause it would hurt less. It had cable steering (with slop) and a Alpha, Not a whole lotta fun (for the wife:cool:) So I switched to the 18' and thats the right combo IMO...

An Edelbrock cam and manifold combo gets you there and then some. Some head work does not hurt either.

I am sure that you could go more agressive on the cam and do even better

Sweet little 16

Having owned a 16 for 3 years there is one thing that I considered a few times, that was laying glass up from the inside and then removing the hook. I feel the the high speed handling issues are some what manifested by the hook that was built into the last foot or so of the boat. It has been said that that was to help with planing on the early way less HP boats. I really feel the hook is no longer needed, I feel it make the boat looser at high speeds. Some will say that that section is out of the water at speed, there is still plenty of water hitting that area however intermittent! And no mine was not a quick one best speed a tad short of 60.

I took the hook out of my 16'
Also added a pad and step
Extended my tabs
Installed an E drive
Extended the cavitation plate on the E drive
Installed a 1,000 hp Gale Banks Twin Turbo
Internal hydraulic steering

If I told you how fast she was, you would not believe me.
A little hint though, don't try to make big speed in a straight line....
A little turn to the steering left or right depending on prop rotation....................Ed

The best I hit w/HM 289 was 53mph (GPS) (1968 Ski Sporter) Going to add tabs and see what I can get.
Any thoughts or advice?

The tabs won't make you any faster. The 16 has built in tabs already in form of that hook.

enjoy it for what it is

add tabs to make it easier to go slower when you are loaded with people

if you want to go faster or beat the neighbour's boat wait until the water is rougher

Riding with the Roots, running about 70, two converging monster wakes coming in, we're in the middle of it, three feet of water coming over the nose...

Lets just say it was a little wet for a few moments, but I would do it again!

My bad Rootsy, I thought you said it made you nervous. Might have been GEOO. Anyway, my hat is off to ya. That's pretty damn fast in a 16.
