Went to the Daytona track on Monday during Bike Week....Saw a bunch of GM stuff in the parking lot (pretty impressive display) and among it all was this engine;

I know some of you are really up to date on GM hardware and am asking opinions???????
(no, I'm not in the market, just curious)

Lot's of folks marinize them for boats. I would think that you could get good results from that. They are not as stout as custom built marine stuff but I would think that they would hold up as long as you don't put them in a heavy boat and beat on them hard.

OK, now while we're oln the subject, what do you think of this block????

I have a very good friend of mine that GM is now sponsoring is running a twin turbo based on this LSX block... I know he's up past 1000 hp...

I would think that the block would really be more for high RPM and high compression engines. It would be fine but it may be overkill for an 8.5-1 engine running 5500 RPMs. Just my opinion. I think that an aluminum block with a little bigger bore would be the hot ticket for a classic to keep the weight down in the rear of the boat. I would think that an aluminum block, aluminum head, aluminum manifold setup would be close to a standard cast iron small block set up. While this would be very expensive, if you look you can find this stuff in good shape used for a lot less. I also have no idea about the salt water factor with aluminum stuff!

Thanks for that link George. I always thought the GMPP 572 was the same setup as a 572 Merlin with a 4.5 x 4.5 bore/stroke but the GMPP has a bigger bore / smaller stroke.... Interesting :)

Regardless: For a boat, I'd just go Merlin if you want that kind of power. It's been done time and time again so you can a bullet proof setup with just a little bit of research.

I am a FIRM believer in closed cooling.

I like your thinking 502stang. I've always wanted to do an aluminum engine in my boat.

Maybe I'll wait for this one. :) http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/ZL1-427-W72C54.aspx

Thanks Yeller!! I would think that a Donavan or Dart block with a 4.5 bore and 4.5 stroke would be a great setup in a light classic hull. Especially after you look at what they did with that x-18 with a blown small block. I guess you only really need to go so fast though………. Right?

only so fast hehehe

There's a 100+ MPH 20' Cigarette over on OSO that sure got me thinking about speed:bonk:

A friend who's also a High Performance engine builder has marinized a number of the ZZ502 motors http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/EngineShowcase/index.jsp?engId=ZZ502502HO&engine=ZZ%20502/502&sku=12496963&engCat=bb

Out of the box they run strong and seem to last very well. A couple are at the 500 hr mark.

He's taken a few and worked them over to get up around 600HP and even these motors are good for well over 300 hrs if maintained well.

I don't necessarily agree that these are any less stout than a good custom build. I've seen more "custom" motors end up at Bruce's shop (usually other builder's customs) than these properly marinized crate motors after a hard season.

I think when you start playing around with the parts that GM put in these is where a lot of people go wrong.

Now, if you want to get into great HP and torque in a light weight package the Ilmor is currently the way to go IMHO.

MJW,
Is that Ilmor in a ZX??? I haven't heard of an Ilmor in a single engine ZX. What kind of performance did this boat show?

Garry gets 750 HP on the 572 and about the same torque on 89 octane! Normally aspirated.

I would think that they would be fine to the 750 hp mark. I would use one for that and think that they are a good product. Above that you are on your own.

Take a peek at the internals and workmanship going into my 540 and you will find a big difference though. I don't think it will end up in Bruce's shop.

Nope, that particular Ilmor is in a 30' Revenger RIB. Currently they are running @ 92 MPH but still working on CG. The Ilmor is 300 lbs lighter than the Diesel they run in the UK so the boat designer is having them move some weight around to optimize the CG. So far they have gotten their best performance with 200lbs of ballast in the rear. They will probably reposition the fuel tanks to move the CG further rear in this configuration.

Here's a link to the US importer's website, click on the Revenger RIB link. http://www.expressenginesusa.com
