McDonzi is in FLA scouting around for a 22' Classic and came across a 2000 with a 'Volvo Penta DPX 385 Racing Outdrive'.

Can anyone offer an opinion on this outdrive/classic combo?

We probably need one up here in Canada, right?

"Tony" is the proud owner of one of these such powered 22's.

He will no doubt tell you why he'd put it up against any like powered single prop 22.

The 22 with the DPX is a very desirable package IMHO. If this one would have been available 8 weeks ago when I was in the market it probably would have been mine.......

Not only does the duoprop eliminate torque steer the DPX has better hydrodynamics than a stock Bravo and it includes external hydraulic steering.

It's a shame Volvo didn't continue with this product, it's a killer package.

Correction,

I guess they still make the outdrive portion: http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/na/en-us/marine_leisure_engines/drives/dpr_duoprop/

I think a DPX is the perfect drive for a 22' Classic. Rated for 600 hp, integrated hydraulic power-steering, top quality components, good pull at all ranges, no slip out of hole and, best of all, true "ride on rails" handling...at any speed. I can easily take my hands off the wheel, even at wot. IMO the Volvo DPX drive and engine package is superior to the Merc counterpart.

The drive is also fast, I estimate 2-5 mph faster than comparably powered Merc packages. My Volvo 7.4gsi is rated 385 hp...at the propshaft. As an added bonus you can pick up a brand new one very cheap if you are patient. People in the know recognize the quality of the DPX drive, but most turn away because of the color, or worries about service, or lack of prop selection.

(The DPX only offers three prop set choices; E2, E3, E4. Mine are E4's, the highest pitched set, and they work great.)

Tim, I miss coming to 1,000 Islands and seeing you and Cindy.
How far are the Les Cheneaux Islands for you guys? (They're at the west end of the Georgian Bay, near Hessel and Cedarville, MI.) That's a neat spot to visit and boat, plus you can bust over to Mackinac Island if the lake is right.

Relating to the thread, I do think there is a blue 22' with the DPX for sale, with a Volvo 7.4 gi.
Call me clueless...but what is the difference between a 7.4gi and a 7.4gsi?

What's the difference in your 7.4 GSI and the red and white boats engine in the link earlier in this thread?

Nope. White/Red Stripe

What year and where is this one, Tim?

I've tried to ask Donzi how many 22's were made with the Volvo DPX package, but have had no luck thus far. Apparently it was a significant cost upgrade, with an approximate range of 1996 to 2000:

'96 red/white.....mine
'96 blue/white....on ebay in FL
'00 red/white.....???

Maybe somebody with some pull at Donzi :wink: could find out more for us.

It is the '00 red/white', although it is all white with red stripe.

So here's a question I have; although I saw your thread on polishing yours when you first got it - I can't remember -
does yours have through hull exhaust? Or, is it even available with these?

Yes, mine is definitely thru-hull.
