Saw an early Donzi Barrel Back yesterday that had a 300 tempest v-drive in it. Said it looked like a small block. I was thinking since the H/M 289 with the volvo outdrive in '67 had like 200 to 225 hp, what would the 300 consist of? Thanks, Tom

I Think the 300 may be HP, I don't think it is 300 CI, I have never heard of a 300 CI. (But I could be Wrong)

They were 350 chevy blocks rated at 300 hp. Most people that I talked to that had them agree the 300 HP was overrated. Not much, if any, better then a 260 hp, etc.

The 300 HP is what it seems to be but wondering what cubic inch motor it was? Now remember it was supposedly in a 1967 boat. What would they have put into a 67 v-drive. I have always heard of the 427 fords with 400 hp but what would be the lesser hp for the v-drive in 1967? It could be that this guy was mistaken and he has a 289 ford block with his v-drive. I do remember seeing a couple from Jacksonville that had a nice white with red stripe v-drive barrel back. I believe it had a 289 in it. Thanks, Tom

Interesting on a '67 because according to this site: http://www.sterndrive.info/sterndriveparts/cross_reference_help.html

This is what a 300 Tempest is:

Sounds like a Tempest repower on the original V-Drive

That would be the one :) :)

The V drives came in small and big block depending upon the depth of your pocket. AIR, the big blocks used a Casale, the small blocks used...... Ahh ****, something else, can't think of it right now.. Velvet Drive??

Thanks Poodle. He may have been misinformed about the tempest part, because it looked original. Now let me ask you this, what would be a 300 hp H/M v-drive model that is listed in the 1969 price guide, right above the 400 hp H/M model? Is it possible something like that would have been an option in 1967 & 1968?
By the way did you see the Baby 14 listed in the for sale section? Didn't you have one of those? Still? Color, motor? Thanks, Tom

My 22 had a Tempest in when I bought, the internal were very good far better then a stock 260. 4 bolt mains, forged steel rods, forged steel crank and forged pistons. Edlebrock high rise intake, a very nice sounding cam with the higher perf lavender strip valve springs. Hi perf oil cooler, high perf ignition pack, plus a few other goodies. I replaced it with a 383 stroker with all Lunati internals, Lunati roller cam, Dart heads, Gil headers and a bit more. It was deliberately built mild but torqie, the Tempest ran 61.5 the 383 65.5. A 260HP 22 will run 60, a 1.5 MPH increase takes a bit of power so don't sell the Tempest short. I in no way agree that the Tempest was a duded 260, Mike rust bought it for his 18 and had a blast. That rated 300HP was good honest HP not BS numbers. I have six pages of factory specs that tell the real poop! If you can find one it has very good potential to make even more HP!

Thanks Jim, Does it sound righnt that 1969 would have been the 1st year or would it possibly been offered earlier? Tom

The big blocks also used a Crusader V-Drive model 4500. I believe WA-LO is running upwards of 600 HP through one.

LOL, and he is way on the other side of 600HP.. I've run with that boy a few times.. ;) ;)

What kind of speed is he getting with that kind of HP and a v-drive? Is it an 18 or Hornet? Tom

I was in the market for new in '86. I checked out the Minx,
it had a Tempest 300, I got cold feet. Waited, checked out
the '87 version - it had the 350 Mag. Sounds like a re-power
to me too.

In the 1969 price sheet the 300 horse engine was a 427 FORD. Lee Holman told me that all of there 427's started life as a 300 horse. If you ordered a 400 horse it was converted. This consisted of higher compression pistons and different camshaft. There was also a 500 horse option but I don't know what the difference was in it. He also told me that the 427's had to be dyno'd at 10% of the horsepower rating before they were shipped to Donzi Marine. Richy.

That is what I thought I had seen somewhere about the 300 hp being a 427. This was a barrel back so? Now what? Guess it would help to get a pic of the engine.duh! Tom

If you can remember, was the distributor in the front or the rear? If it was in the front it's a Ford.

Except in v drive installations it's in the rear...

Good one

Ok, to be specific, if it's on the same side of the motor as the drive belts it's a Ford
