A New Zealand-built boat that runs on biodiesel — and the fat of the captain —- is set to kick off an attempt to break the world speed record for circumnavigating the globe in a motorboat next year.

Hmmm...this will be his second attempt. Last year's attempt wasn't going especially well then ended all together when they rammed an unlit fishing boat somewhere off south america, killing one of the fishermen and seriously injuring another. And then getting a little vacation at a military base courtesy of that county's navy.

I got a chance to see the boat when they were in San Francisco bay before last year's attempt. I spoke to a Cummins tech who was (ahem) less than pleased that they were running 'his' engine on Biodiesel. He was there working out some of the issues the biodiesel had caused on the run accross the pacific.

Interesting boat and concept though. I hope they have better luck this time.

The Earthrace Boat was in Pensacola earlier this year.
