Depends on the boat, as weight is also a factor, but much over 400 could get tricky. 400 you have to baby it........

It also depends on how you drive it and where. If you are an offshore guy, taking on big waves and airing it out the power is going to be a whole lot less. If you are careful driver, you can go even higher than 400.
My Merc certified mechanic I used in St Pete since I bought my very first boat, got over 3000 hours on a heavy fishboat, with a 454 in front of an Alpha. I pointed out is was probably because he kept drive oil in it, instead of salt water.:eek!: :)

That and I'm sure he is not gunning it everywhere also.
