oil capacity

Just changed the oil in my 350 merc. Don,t have the manual it,s a crate ingine don,t know what yr. Boat is a 86 minx ..The Solas manual says 5&1/2 qts. After runing it for 10 min. the stick reads over looks like about a qt. Should i go by the stick or the book....Thanks Joe

you mentioned crate motor? the first one i did only held 4.5 qts of oil.. so i pulled the engine back out and ordered a moroso 7qt oil pan,melling oil oump and the moroso oil pump pick up tube.in my eyes 4.5 qts of oil just isnt enough oil for a engine that runs at 2500~4600 rpm...

I agree with MrFix. But what do you expect from a guy who has a 14 Qt oil pan on his 502. The only problem with too much oil is it takes longer to warm the engine up---small price to pay for peace of mine. Than I over engineer a crow bar!!!
