My 67 18 classic has a steel gas tank with glass peep hole in the floor. I suspect that I will need to replace the tank some day. I'm wondering how difficult it is to lift the deck and what material the new tank should be made of( stainless, alluminum, glass). Thanks in advance for any input, ethyl.

I'm going into a lot more than what you would do just to change the tank, but here's the way I removed mine;

And this is how I installed von kamps' tank;

Below is what yours will probably look like. I'll hunt up the threads about the way I did my '67 Ski Sporter.
I was hesitant, but really did not have a choice since I refused to pay a shop $4-8k to do it for me. Without the advice (and encouragement) of this board I would have been sunk. With my brother's invaluable help, and barn, it was really not that hard.
Consider pulling the engine while you're at it to repaint the hull and bilge. Install a new bilge pump, clean up wiring issues, check throttle assembly, and examine your instrumentation. With the deck off, all those possible issues are way easier to address.
Many here have done this project...searches will turn up a ton of info on this topic.
