I think they're pretty fascinating and visit as many as possible. Yesterday I visited Sturgeon Point Light which is on Michigan's Lake Huron shoreline. The Great Lakes have many lighthouses and this one was built in 1869 and first lit in 1870. It has been restored and still operates with a fresnel lens made in 1887. I'd like to see pics of other lighthouses here. I'm working on loading the pics.

This is a pretty famous one - I actually have shots of many. I'll add as time permits.

In the back of my neighborhood ( Lighthouse Point subdivision), you can see 2 lighthouses.

One, the Morris Island Light that is presently being stabilized due to erosion.

And the other Sullivan's Island Lighthouse.

So, yes we are into lighthouses:propeller:

Pretty cool things.
Buffett wrote an entertaining book " A Salty Piece of Land" it's about a lighhouse in the bahamas, we listened to it on CD while the way to Sarasota.

Anyone remember the joke about the aircraft carrier captain that had an issue with what he thought was an oncoming vessel, and wanted him to deviate, because he was an aircraft carrier. The other one said no, that he would not deviate, the captain insisted he was bigger and more important..
The other said he wasn't so big, but being a lighthouse he was sure it was in the captain's best interest to give way...:bonk:

Funny, but never happened... There are a lot of questionable lighthouse stories and there seem to be a lot of "haunted" ones. Here is a pic of the St. Clair Flats Old Channel Front Range Light. It is the mate to the one in my signature. It was completed in 1859 but tilted badly and was rebuilt in 1875 only to tilt again. It has been stabilized with the structure around the base but is in need of restoration. This light still operates.

I've always been fascinated by lighthouses. One of my favorites is the Ponce inlet South of Daytona. It's one of the tallest at 188'. The first order Fresnel is located on the property in a specifically built lense museum. I't well worth the trip if you find yourself nearby.

I used to have pictures of what I believe were all the lighthouses in Florida, but my hard drive crap out on me with all my pictures on it. Here's one at Egmont Key, at the mouth of Tampa Bay. I'm sure everyone at the Hometown Rally this year.

I don't know if Catch is "into" lighthouses, but he'll probably dredge a channel to one. :)

Carl,

If you are into lighthouses, you might want to take a look at this organization dedicated to saving the South Channel Lights. This is one of the few causes I donate to. There has been a lot of discussion and effort put into preserving these little pieces of history. For mr, Lake St. Clair would not be the same without them. Here are a few pics from my collection. GO GREEN!!!

http://www.lakestclair.net/forums/index.php?showforum=16 That's cool, they did a great job restoring the tall one. I think they should leave the short one tilted but reconstruct the lantern room. It seems to be it's destiny to be tilted. Here's one of my favorite pics I took of The Detroit River Light in Lake Erie. It's been lit since 1885.

I believe they spent a lot of money to straighten up the tilted one and it's leaning again. Not sure what the deal is, but would hate to lose it..

Here's some. St. Augustine, Nassau, and a light on the San Juan islands.

BTW, does anyone collect "Harbor Lights"? looking for St. Aug. and Okracoke.

I also like the clockwork mechanisms that drove the lenses. The lense suspension of the one at Ponce Inlet ran on about six wheels w/some really nice bearings. Some floated on mercury....talk about low friction.
Also the oil supply for the lamp at Ponce Inlet would only last about 4 hours so the keeper had to climb the 200 plus steps two or three times a night!!:eek!:
Additionally the lamps themselves were interesting in that the kerosene wicks were multi part and formed concentric circles, i.e., one inside another. They produced a pretty decent light.

I'm running out of pics since a lot of mine are from before I went digital but here is one I took last month of the Lake St. Clair Light which was completed in 1941. I like to visit the off-shore ones by boat since they are so secluded. This is a modern light and is still lit to tell where the shipping channel angles off.

Here's one of the most famous Louisiana Lighthouses, New Canal Lighthouse in New Orleans. It was the Coast Guard New Orleans operational location.
Still not repaired.
We have a home in Madisonville on the Tchefucnte River. At the mouth where it meets Lake Ponchartrain is the Madisonville Lighthouse. Until a few years ago it was still owned by the Coast Guard. The Town purchased it and has been raising money for a complete restoration. Is only accessible by water now, the lighthouse keeper's cottage was moved to the new state museum in town. I have spent many evenings with a bottle of wine and my wife watching sunsets from the top.
Carl you are in good company. John Goodman is building a new house across the river from me, one of his buddies Dan Ackroyd and he are BIG lighthouse fans. They had a fund raiser for the lighthouse restoration and raised alot of bucks. Ackroyd is really into Lighthouses, very informed and involved in restoration of them.

Not very pretty but definitely unique. This tower is 13 miles off the coast. The water is so shallow there you can see the bottom. Cobia and cuda school around it.

RedDog, the Diamond Shoals light may be modern but is extremely cool. The offshore ones are my favorites.

Barry, the Pensacola Light is also awesome; and 171 feet!! Michigan's tallest are around 110'.

I'm surprised to see a light at Lake Havasu!

Randy, here are pics of the St. Clair Flats Lights from a 1986 book when they were in danger of collapsing into the water. I think the seawall structures have stabilized them and don't think the little one will tilt anymore. I say restore it but leave it tilted. Kind of like the leaning tower of Piza.

I dug up one more pic from my collection. This one is on the Detroit River. As far as I can tell it is a modern reproduction with no historic value but it still looks cool.

Thanks for the pics everyone.

I checked out Tawas Point Light last week. This one is in a state park and has been completely restored, no $ spared! It was built in 1876.

Neat pics & cool info.. I have been to some light houses before & always thought they were neat. I'd like to get to some more when I get out traveling again. The ones I mainly went to were mainly on the east coast. Some of the ones I really liked were in Virginia & New England..

I also like Flying Dutchmen stories & tales from the great lakes & the east coast..

I took these pics of "Sputnik" a couple weeks ago. It's the "Alpena Light" built in 1914 in Alpena on Michigan's upper Lake Huron shore. I bought this pic to hang in my cabin; I think it's an actual photo. I don't suppose anyone could identify it?

As a kid growing up at the north end of Virginia Beach, we use to ride our bicycles in to Fort Story to play in the old Cape Henry Lighthouse which located about a mile from our house. At the time, the lighthouse was always open, and from up there, you could see for miles out in the Atlantic and the Chesapeake Bay. The "new" Cape Henry Lighthouse, located across the street from the old, was built of cast iron in 1881.
