Washington State Ferries, about few miles from here. Crossing a small Strait.

Mukilteo Lighthouse Park

These Issaquah 130 Class ferries are over 300 feet long and 78 feet wide and weight in at 2477 tons (4,954,000 lbs) unloaded......

Yes, this is salt water  ... so much for the cars ;)

Lenny, I clicked on your link, then zoomed out the map. That crossing is way "inland" and it seems quite sheltered, is it always that rough, or was it a day that the wind just blew the right way ????

It's inland, but certainly not sheltered north or south - look how much fetch you have to the south especially for a good wind to build waves.

Earlier this year I was up there in a little Nordic Tug (seems to be the official state boat based on how many I saw :eek!:). On my last day I crossed Rossario Straight over to Anacortes and got absolutly pounded by a southern wind. Everywhere else I went the same wind was a non-issue since there wasn't as much fetch.

Hey Lenny, do they load the ferries lighter when the weather is bad up there? I've ridden those guys, and it seems like the front row of cars is pretty much right up at the opening. A good wave over the bow like that would not only douse them, but could even shove them around. Do they maybe leave off a couple rows at the bow to give the water some chance to run off before slaming into a row of cars?

No, how ever many cars there are, there are and they load. To capacity if the load is there. The other crossing, (zoom out) Victoria(Can) to Port Angeles (USA) is far worse. The old boat has been doing that run since 1958. It takes ALL the weather on its beam  and the water is HUGE in the winter.

We did that one a few years back in August and it was rough as hell. That old boat is 341 feet long and a good number of folks lost their lunch on that trip! :eek!:

What? Are you going to burst my bubble? All us west-coasters are under the impression the entire east coast is a mill pond from Florida to New York

And as a kid in the midwest I also pretty much though the entire east coast looked like Manhatten, and all of California was LA...

As anyone who grew up in the Annapolis area and crossed the Bay Bridge many times, I always took note of the old ferry docks on the western side of the old Bay Bridge.

I often imagined what it would have been like to take a ferry across to the Eastern shore.

Many years later, in route to visiting a friend on Whidbey Island (the Mukilteo-Clinton run), I chanced upon a display case on the ferry.
This was the Rhododendron, which had been temporary placed back in service on this route. I got as close as I could to a Bay Ferry ride, and it made me smile.

It use to be great fun to park the car in town and then spend a whole afternoon riding the Mukilteo back and forth on rough days. I think it was $1.50 or something as a walk-on passenger back then. And you didn't have to leave, you could just stay on and ride all day.

My wife and I were out there last Oct. and had a similar ferry ride. It was great. That area has got to be the best storm watching place in the world.:yes:

Here's a pic when it was amazingly clear. Mt. Baker in the background.
