Thru the years my son and I have built a few engines. Some stout and some streetable types that ran good. This time around I figured let a good builder do the short block and finish off the rest of the build ourself. Finding a credible builder was the problem. Most builders wanted high dollar for a short block or refused to return calls. I contacted Golen Engine in NH for my 383 short block and was pleased with price and communication. List of things he installed as follows:
1. 1 pc. roller cam block, 4 bolt main, ARP studs and 0 decked bored .030 over
2. Eagle 4340 forged steel crank (dynamicly bal. front and rear. 3.75
3. Scat 4340 forged steel I-beam rods 6" full floating pins.
4. Mahl forged pistons w/ coated skirts 16cc dish.
5. Mahl plasma-moly rings
6. Clevite h-series bearings.
7. Cloyes double roller timing set.

For the roller cam, called cam builders on the other site (OSO) and got some good and bad advice. Finally contacted Bullet Cam and they advised this cam.
Dur.at .050 I-230 E-238, LSA 112, This cam has a 69 1/2* overlap.
I had the cam sent to Golen and was installed and degreed. Some pics

More. Pulleys powdercoated and March power steering pump. Looks better than the saginaw pump.

Painted the bilge with 3 coats of white Bilgecoat and here is the finished product.
BTW the D is a 88 18C.

Did not dyno. Talked to Bullet Cam and he wanted all the specs of the build. He mentioned I overkilled on the all forge bottom end, I agree. On top are AFR 195 Elim. alum. heads w/ 65 cc runners. With the 0 deck used a .039 head gasket to provide a tight quench. The numbers he guessed with the custom cam was 450 to 500 tq. and 475 hp. Remember, these are his numbers. On the lake it pulls extremely hard, sounds different and only ran it to 4800. Two problems popped up, minor water leak and oil leak. I suspect the 7 qt. Hamburger oil pan. That GD pan has 4 gaskets and only fits their pan. Stay away from Hamburger pans is my advice. But the leak is minor. Jim

Your right about them too, the welds crack and the darn things leak.

Sam, Had to check my notes. Twisting a Turbo 1 23, at 4800 netted 64.4 mph gps. Are you the owner of the yellow 18 with the SS? Jim
