There's an interesting, on going thread about surface drives on boat design forums; http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11320
It talks about the problems of backing up among other things......
But one of my favorites of odd ball small surface drives is this one;

and I particularly like this picture;

Surface drives...Yeah buddy, That rocks! Got to get upstream somehow...

Thanks for the thread links. I've always been interested in SDs anyway, ever since I saw them being used on offshore racing boats and most relevant to us in GEOO's boat.

I've got a soft spot for the small boats that manage to shame the $220k+ boats...

If you loo in Cabela's they have a shaft with a Honda general purpose engine similar to the ones in the James bond movies. They have others called Go Devils made in Louisiana.

My boss has a boat with a prodrive. He likes it... It's his 'other' boat to get him into the shallows.

I haven't heard that before, pretty good.

My boss always says that his can run so shallow it will "run on spit"

Also, here's the Sonny Levi designed and built "Levi Drive"
http://www.levidrives.com/drives240.html
It's interesting in that it's fixed and has a vectorable rudder.
There's lots of different ideas out there......
