What is the proper lube for a Volvo 270 drive vintage 1978?
Thanks in advance
Many have survived over 30 years on plain old 30wt, as of late several have switched to the Merc HiPo and appear to be doing fine. They can run a fairly thin oil (IE 30wt) as they run very cool compared to any other drive out there.

same with mine, its been running 30wt for 20+ years and no problems at all so far :crossfing: it might be needin a rebuild soon tho....
Shortly after I bought my '67 16' in 1995 I started using Redline HD...a synthetic. The drive is 40 years old and still going strong...unless Jay Lurie is airing it out at 60 mph every weekend!!

30 Weight. Volvo recommends nothing else and Thank God. Gear lube reeks and stays with you for days.

seem to recall some talk here of a tech bulletin or a internal company memo from Volvo that stated they reversed their specs and that
90 w gear oil should be used????

I think Big Grizzly got sick of repeating himself...
My 200 has been running on 80w-90 dino oil since the mid '70s than I know of...

After 35 years in my drive I will stick with the 30wt plus DonS over at iboats says its the right stuff and he knows everything Volvo. He has even explained the bulletin you mentioned one time but I forget what he said.
Run what you like it is a very tough drive, and will out live any other in its class many times over!
