I was looking at a couple props today and was curious about a couple things.

Prop A back:

One of them (A) appears to have had the splined hub changed?

Prop A also is stamped MICHIGAN and has a number on the back side. Did MW market props cast by Volvo?

The surface that seats on the shoulder of the shaft is about 1/4" deeper in the one without the brass insert (B). Otherwise all the other dimensions match between the two. It's as if the hub was pressed farther into one than the other.

Prop B is supposed (and appears) to be NOS.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these differences they would care to share?

Thanks,
Frank

I just purchased a 14x22LH on ebay, (don't have it yet.) Same number as yours, but does not appear to have the brass insert or the Michigan markings. It looks more like the 14x24. I'll post pics when I get it.

Prop A has been re-hubbed and Prop B is a stock Volvo hub.

. . . and if your hub in you Ultra prop looks like Prop "B", then send it out to have it re-hubbed to look like prop "A". The factory hub in the Ultra prop is weak and can fail at any time - even out of the box after being run only a couple of times. On the other hand, some factory Volvo hubs run for years under load. It's a roll of the dice.

To install a Michigan hub in an Ultra prop, the prop body requires some machining.

Admiral-C&B Propeller in Tampa (http://www.acbprop.com/) does Volvo hubs right and turns the around in less than a week. About $95.

both props are long hun type. I agree with Forrest. I can say I had a Michican on my Corsican for years never a problem, Now I have a hill and a Solas no problem there either

Thanks for the input.

What keeps the brass insert from spinning inside the prop? Is it splined? A pressed taper? Crazy glue?

While a "Lack of Horsepower" could certainly be a contributing factor I suspect it is secondary to some other, as yet unknown (to me) force at work here.

Now if you had said "crazy glue COMBINED with a lack of horsepower" I would have belived ya. :D

I guess I can live with that. :D I am assuming you mean it is a pressed taper and not splined?
