It's a 1972 (or so) 318 4BBL. Yup, solid lifters with adjustable rockers. Very cool. Well, sorta I guess. Hydraulic takes all the guesswork out of it..but it's not real "hot rod". :convertib:

last year for solid lifter 318's in the narrow block was 1967, in a D500-D600 truck, never in a car, or a boat.... somebody's had their hand in the cookie jar.. I had a set of these in a '70 340 Duster with a solid Crower cam, and mine came from a 318 donor truck at Bob's Used Truck Parts in Medley, you needed the truck pushrods too since the rocker end was cupped for the adjusting screws, which if my memory isn't toooo :pimp: foggy did NOT have jam nuts... do yours have the thin springs between the stand supports??

Your memory is great. Yes, cupped pushrod tops, and no jam nuts, just real stiff to turn. No springs between the rocker stands either. They can slide back and forth about 1/8" or so. I also haven't been able to find any brass ID plate in this engine either, no #'s at all, although the 4BBL intake has MARINE cast into it. See the thread below/above for pics of the days activities.

I have no idea what cam is in that thing, so my guess at valve adjustment has no value...

pretty sure those rocker shafts REQUIRED short springs to center them on the valve stem, or it would eat the valve guides and burn a valve...

the marine 318 factory 4bbl was rated at 225hp, the 340 was rated at 240hp... both had hydraulic cam profiles... the 318 in a car was 240hp and the 340 in a car was 275hp... the 340 was HIGHLY underrated in a car however :lookaroun: it would smoke a 290hp Z28, or a 300hp Chevy, or a 335hp 428 Ford, or an LS5 Chevy... this I am absolutely POSITIVE of...
