“Spectacular attacks” expected from Al Qaeda in after its activities in Iraq disrupted by US-led major offensive

July 11, 2007, 8:23 AM (GMT+02:00)

Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner reported Wednesday that in two months, the offensive had hit the jhadists in and around Baghdad, killing or capturing 26 high-level al Qaeda leaders in Iraq and disrupting their networks and safe havens.

He said the terrorist group was fully expected “to lash out and stage spectacular attacks to reassert themselves.”

The Iraqi interior spokesman reported Wednesday that 200 explosive belts had been seized in a truck crossing into Iraq from Syria.

DEBKAfile: The US aircraft carrier USS Enterprise will not rotate with any of the two carriers already present in the Middle East

July 12, 2007, 10:23 AM (GMT+02:00)

USS Enterprise carrier

Our military sources report that the Enterprise, whose deployment with the US Fifth Fleet, was first revealed by DEBKA-Net-Weekly 300 on June 1, will in fact join the USS Stennis and USS Nimitz near the shores of Iran - not replace them, as reported in some media. The carrier which departed Norfolk Monday is heading for a six-month Middle East tour of duty with its strike group of four warships: the guided missile destroyers Arleigh Burke, Stout, James E .Williams and Forrest Sherman, as well as three more ships – and 7,500 sailors in all aboard.

(CBS) JERSEY CITY A Jersey City woman made what to her and her neighbors was a shocking discovery Friday morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.

Niranjana Besai was leaving her house, located at 88 Nelson Street, to go to work just after 8 a.m. when she spotted the launcher on her front lawn.

"I read it and it [said] 'missile,'" Besai told CBS 2 HD. "There was little 'missile' [writing] on it."

She immediately called police.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD that the device is an AT-4 missile launcher that is used to fire against tanks and buildings. The device was first approved by the U.S. Army in 1985 and its very powerful warheads can penetrate through more than a foot of armor.
Each launcher can be used only once, however, and the device found on Besai's lawn was said to have been used previously. It was deemed inoperable and turned over U.S. Army officials at the New Jersey's Fort Monmouth.

Investigators were trying to determine when and where the launcher had been fired.

Officials initially expressed concern after discovering that Besai's house is located along a flight path for Newark Liberty International Airport. They later learned that used, inoperable AT-4 tubes are sold to the public through military surplus Web sites and other outlets.

Residents along Nelson Street were alarmed by the discovery.

Besai's neighbor, Joe Quinn, told CBS 2 HD he was outside of his home when he noticed Besai pointing at the device from her front porch. When he walked over to see what the fuss was about, he was just as shocked to see weapon, said to be about three or four feet long and weighing about 15 pounds.

"She's pointing that there's something in the front," he said. "I said, 'Let me come down and take a look,' and I saw a little soldier on it and I said, 'Whoa, that's a missile launcher or something!'"

Quinn says he originally thought the launcher was just a pipe, but after noticing the picture of the soldier -- which he described as a soldier kneeling and holding a launcher -- he realized it looked similar to a missile launcher he'd seen on television.

"I got scared myself," he said. "It looked like a bazooka, and right away you think what does somebody want with something like that?"

DEBKAfile Exclusive: USS Enterprise Strike Group passes through Suez Canal early Saturday after joint maneuver with French Charles De Gaulle carrier in Mediterranean

July 27, 2007, 11:10 PM (GMT+02:00)

French Rafale M fighter takes off from USS Enterprise deck

Egyptian forces were deployed to secure the waterway for the passage of USS nuclear carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), en route for the Persian Gulf. Monday, July 23, the group entered the Mediterranean for joint maneuvers with the French Charles De Gaulle carrier.

Rafale M fighters took off from its deck, touched down briefly on Enterprise runways and returned to the parent ship. This is the first time ever that French fighter-bombers have landed on an American carrier and used its facilities.

DEBKAfile’s Middle East and Washington sources say that the closely integrated maneuver is part of the growing cooperation between the Bush administration and the new Nicolas Sarkozy presidency on burning Middle East issues.

DEBKAfile’s sources have previously pointed to a dramatic opening-up of interchanges between Paris, Tehran and Hizballah. They now affirm that this new track was launched with tacit approval from Washington.

Friday, July 27, on the heels of the joint naval-aerial exercise, French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner arrived in Beirut for a visit prepared by France’s former ambassador in Damascus, Jean-Claude Cousseran. Early next week, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrive in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Rice will also visit Jerusalem and Ramallah.

The contours are thus emerging of a division of labor whereby the United States concentrates on Iraq, the Persian Gulf and the Israel-Palestinian dispute, leaving France to deal directly with Iran, Syria and Lebanon. Sarkozy and his emissaries move into position as the potential go-between for Washington and Tehran, while Britain’s Tony Blair acts for the Quartet to mold Palestinian institutions of government.

The gambit on which Washington and Paris have embarked together takes into account Iran’s elevated standing as a topnotch Middle East power. This partnership and the new horizon opening up were explored in detail in the latest DEBKA-Net-Weekly out this Friday.

The evolving Washington-Paris track has a negative potential for Israel, which the Olmert government has been slow to appreciate

DEBKA Reports: Iran buys 250 long-distance Sukhoi fighter-bombers, 20 fuel tankers, from Russia

July 27, 2007, 7:15 PM (GMT+02:00)

Tehran and the Russian Rosoboronexport arms group are about to sign a mammoth arms deal running into tens of billions of dollars for the sale to Tehran of 250 Su-30MKM warplanes and 20 IL-78 MKI fuel tankers. DEBKAfile’s military sources report Iran has stipulated delivery of the first aircraft before the end of 2007.

The transaction, Russia’s largest arms deal in 30 years, will endow Iran with a long-range aerial assault capability. The Sukhoi can sustain a four-and-a-half hour raid at its maximum range of 3,000 km against long-distance, marine and low-lying ground targets across the Persian Gulf and Middle East, including Israel and Lebanon.

The fuel tankers extends the Su-30MKM’s assault sustainability to 10 hours and its range to 8,000 km at altitudes of 11-13 km. The closest comparable plane in the West is the American F-15E fighter bomber. Iran’s acquisition of an exceptionally large fleet of the Russian fighter-bomber will elevate its air force to one of the two largest and most advanced in the region, alongside the Israeli Air Force.

Iranian air crews are already training on the new Sukhoi aircraft, ready to start flying them early next year with only a short delay after delivery. DEBKAfile’s sources report that Moscow is selling Tehran the same Sukhoi model as India received earlier this year. The Iranians leaned hard on New Delhi to let them have the Israeli avionics and electronics the Indian Air Force had installed in the Russian craft. India refused.

Russia began delivering the same craft in June to Malaysia, which also sought Israeli avionics without success. The Su-20MKM has won the nickname of “Islamic Version of Sukhoi.”

Its two-member crew shares the workload. The first pilot flies the aircraft, controls weapons and maneuvers the plane in a dogfight. The co-pilot employs BVR air-to-air and air-to-ground guided weapons in long-range engagements, sweeps the arena for enemy craft or missiles and performs as command-and-control in group missions.

Some of the plane’s systems are products of the French Thales Airborne Systems company. Moscow’s contract with Tehran for the sale of the Su-30MKM must therefore be cleared with Paris.

There is no decision in Jerusalem about asking Paris to withhold its consent to a deal which would substantially upgrade the long-range air assault capabilities of the Islamic Republic whose leaders want to wipe Israel off the map. However, President Nicolas Sarkozy is in mid-momentum of a diplomatic drive in the Arab and Muslim world and unlikely to be receptive to an Israeli approach. The only chance of aborting the Russian sale would be to route the approach through Washington.

Sorry guys, normal deployment for the big E. Nothing special there. BTW, after Brian Tuvell, I'm the next in rotation to deploy with the IWO JIMA strike group again. We were out last fall for the whole Lebanon evacuation of 15,000 citizens. Who knows what'll come up next....

NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities arrested three men after spotting a strange-looking submarine bobbing Friday near the docked Queen Mary 2.

The three were being questioned, but authorities said there was no indication terrorism was involved.

A detective noticed the vessel, with one person inside, and an inflatable boat carrying two people, near a security zone around the luxury ocean liner docked at the cruise ship terminal on the East River in Brooklyn.

It was not clear what the people were doing in the vessel.

The vessel was partly submerged and "appeared to be designed for underwater navigation," the police department said in a news release. Charges were expected.

Photographs showed a vessel that resembled a diving bell, with a hatch on top.

WABC-TV reported that it was equipped with oxygen tanks. E-mail to a friend
