I am mounting some 3/8" U-bolts on the Minx transom for stern trailer tie-downs since all it has right now is the rear lifting ring (I will also probably use these to pull a tube every once in a while as well). I'm thinking this should be no problem???
They come with some very minimal steel backing plates. Am I going to need to beef up the plates, or do these look sufficient? Do any Donzi models come with these from the factory?
The transom is about 3/8" outboard, I would put 1/2" plywood backers about 4" square that will be more then enough.

I'm finally getting around to putting these stern eyes on this weekend, and I've read some great past threads about drilling fiberglass. Two questions:
- The Dewalt #DW1956 pilot point bit set only comes with the 3/8 bit then jumps to 1/2. Will I not need slightly more clearance than 3/8 will give me since they are 3/8 bolts and I will also have to account for the thickness of the epoxy when I seal the core? If so, I have to use a regular bit which defeats the purpose of the pilot points???
- Do I really need 5200 on the topside of the transom, or could I use 4200 or a silicone sealant? I don't anticipate having to take these off anytime soon, but they are above the water line and I'd like to leave my options open...
Thanks.

A countersink in your drill will very effectively cut the gel w/o chipping it. Do that first on your 3/8" hole, then drill to 7/16".
Use a very minimal amount of 5200 around the studs and that will be fine.
BTW, when I replaced these on my Minx, I made the backing boards out of Starboard.
I use silicone on things that may need removal down the road, 5200 is a pain!

On second thought, I second that motion.
