Have a mech experienced w/ King Cobra's coming Sat morning to service outdrive. He asked me to ask how the other co. removed unit to weld skeg. I just found out today that they did not remove complete outdrive. They just removed lower part. Mech says they might not aligned gear shaft back rightwhen the put it back together. Will still probably replace shift cable. Any ideas on this?

You Mechanic is a BS artist there is no shift shaft on a King Cobra! The main gear shaft is splined and does not care what spline it mates with!

Your mechanic might be confusing your drive with an earlier King Cobra.

Your drive's shift mechanism actuator is on the port side under the plastic cover on the upper gear housing.
This moves a lever which pushes the cone clutch (inside the upper gear housing) up and down for forward and reverse.

The earlier King Cobra has a dog clutch (like an Alpha) in the lower gear housing with a shift lever.

If the drive will not go into gear by manually pushing and pulling the shift cable, and the shift cable is good (cable housing has not failed between transom and gearcase) ;

First I would check shift mechanism under plastic cover on port side
Second I would inspect clutch, gear lash and shims on upper unit :(
