View Full Version : How fast should my 22 Classic run?

I have a 22' Classic (1994) and just rebuilt the motor (it is now a 461ci). I tried 4 different props on the weekend with speeds ranging from 60mph to 65mph and tach readings from 4000rpm to 5200rpm. The optimum prop was a 23 pitch / 3 blade at 65mph @ 5000rpm. I think that I can get a bit more out of a 25 pitch but before I spend the money, I want to ensure that my air fuel ratio is perfect and that I am in the proper speed range for this type of boat. Any suggestions and assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is that a King Cobra ? Ford engine?

Thanks for your reply!

Cool, but how fast would you say your 502 runs with the 25"? I am trying to get an idea if I am getting maximum speed out of my boat with the recent rebuild. Thanks!

What elevation are you running in?

Folks,

Thanks for your help. I don't have all of the information, but I will give it a shot.

- I am running in Ontario Canada (fresh water) and therefore not at altitude.

- The motor was put on the dyno without marine manifolds and came in at 440hp at 5000rpm. Therefore with the marine manifolds we are probably sitting around 400hp.

- I have the incorrect serial number for the outdrive and therefore can't tell you what the gear ratio is until after the weekend. I am thinking that this is part of the problem because it consitantly came out of the hole with a 21'-3 blade, 23'-3 blade, 25'-4 blade and 27'-3 blade. I had 4 people in the boat with the 27'-3 blade and it had no issues getting out of the hole.

I am going to try a 26' chopper this weekend to see if I can get out of the hole and get great top end. Failing that I think that I will need to look into:

(i) gear ratio
(ii) water leaking from the manifolds (long shot)

Thanks!

It only said Canada on your profile. If it was salt water, I wouldn't have asked the question. There are lakes at higher elevations.

where abouts in Ontario are you running?

to clarify what body of water do you typically run? :)
