I was told to go 10hrs and not to go over 40,000 rpm.Then change oil/filter.Sound right?...I got new cam and alum.heads 502 block should be at 605hp.Will post pictures, hope to get boat back and in the water next weekend.

I think the motor is going up to max out at 6000 rpm It ran 5600 before.Will change prop pitch once I get a base line to work with

The 4,000 sounds right. Just try not to keep a constant speed. vary from 2,800 to 4,000. I would start at about 2,800 to 3,500 for the first hour then work from there. I would at least change the filter after the first run, to catch any unforeseen stuff in the block. Just a safety margin. We change oil and filters after every dyno run. The reason for slow break ins is more for shake down runs if something is amiss you hopefully won't tear too much up.

I've often wondered about that myself. Engine builders run the piss out of them on the dyno when they are new.:confused:

The rings are the biggest thing that you are breaking, since I was a kid it has always been recommend to do hard pulls at like Randy say varying moderate RPM's. I am an oil freak on a rebuild I do three changes at 1, 5 and again at 10 to me it is real cheap insurance. I also do annual oil samples which I start at 20 hours as by then the engine should be rid of all debris.

Brake it in like your going to drive it,,,,i have 7yrs on my sbc and it saw 6200 rpm the minute i put it in the water and still sees that rpm quite often during the day....so i say drive it like you stole it,i would rather have it brake noe then in the middle of boating season..
