Anyone see the Mythbusters on Discovery channel with the 38ZR? Aired on the 18th of April. They're working on the myth where the 38 foot powerboat split itself around a channel marker. They went out with a Donzi rep on a 100mph boat ride. That sucker was shooting quite a rooster tail. I wonder what power it had- definitely staggered engine setup. Maybe 700s...

I haven't seen the show but, this did happen several years ago . Just south of the Chesapeake bay bridge, a 38' go fast (sorry, have no idea what hull) hit a channel marker piling almost head on (about 12" to port) and split the deck and hull clear back to the cockpit.
It remained lodged on the pole at water level until removed.

wish I had better details but, "it's been done"

That's the point of MythBusters....
The captain/owner told the LEO's he was only travelling at 25 MPH. They were re-enacting the accident to prove or dis-prove his claim.
BTW it was a Fountain.

The MythBuster guys are crazy, not stupid.....

They went for a high speed performance run in a 38ZR.
They smashed up a Fountain.... :D

Yup, they smashed up some model RC boats and a stripped down $1500 fountain hull. They said they wanted to smash the 38ZR, but couldn't afford the fuel bill, let alone the $350k price tag.

Madpoodle,
Where did you hear or read that the marker's piling was square?
Unless, it was replaced later, I recall these very channel markers to be on round poles.

I watched that episode as well. They film here near our office. Heck, I can see the dealer who provided the boat from my office window.

I too had some issues with the test procedure. For example, they didn't have any running gear in the hull. That would have added a lot of mass to the impact and the engines would have continued to run which would have helped push the boat onto the piling. They also decided the boat must have turned into the pile at the last second so they rigged a steering mechanisim on the front of the trailer, but it turned so aggresivly the momentum of the boat just pushed straight ahead. Plus they didn't take into account running angle or water conditions or any number of other little variables.

All the same, I think they came out with the right result. The guy wasn't going 25 mph to do that damage.

Many of those channel marker poles are actually big 'ol steel I-beams driven into the bottom. In fact, the one in the picture appears that it may actually be a rusty old I-beam rather than a wood pile.
