i have a friend here who has a stepped hull zx i think it is a 27 or 26 , anyway he has a hp500 and it runs maybe 65-67 mph . is this about right for this boat ?

The 27 is really a 28. No size difference. I am not totally sure about the 26 but Last Real Texan was pushing around 70 in his 27ZX with the 500EFI. That is before the shorty and more dialing in. I would think that a 27ZX twin step with a hp500 should easily do 67.

Stay tuned as Tex breaks 80 with his Procharged 500EFI.

thanks , the engine has 450 hours and is probably getting a little tired . he re-did the valve springs this season when he got the boat . he does have a blown 540 that he could drop in ... that might be a good ride !!!!

That sounds about right.

Oh hell yes, the Blown 540 is a great idea! I plan to throw some serious hp at mine when it comes refresh time. Like I said, stay tuned for Tex's results. He will be pushing north of 700 hp in his. I love the old ZX's. Great lines and built like a tank. I took mine out in some serious snotty conditions last weekend after the storm It loved it. Be prepared for a wet ride though.

Before adding the shorty on my twin step 97 27 zx....the fastest it ran was with a 3 bladed mirage plus prop.....was easy to hit 70 -71 on a regular basis ...even remenber hitting 71 with 4 guys and a half of tank of fuel that day ....googd conditions however....
After adding the shorty I never really did get it dialed in too well ....best was with a labbed 28 bravo I and it was not repeatable....75.1gps.....but it would regularly hit 70 -72 depending on what was thrown at it....
Now to the next chapter.....
5 psi of boostr on a 500 efi......
only have run the boat once and without triming for speed or really hammering on it.....lots of throttle left......hit 76.7 easily......then ranout of prop at half throttle . Am waiting for a 30 inch bravo to arrive for testing next week. I think low 80 's will be no problem perhaps even mid 80's ...we shall see..............

So is a 450 hour 500 hp producing 65-67 GPS consistantly a good # ....I say yes.
