Very nice. I looked at a Yellowfin a few years back that had a similar look to yours with the same cuddy design.

WOW! More pictures please. Could someone give us some history on Cary, and the hull? Is it a copy of the Donzi 28 hull? Man I love that boat. Are they v-drives or straight inboards?

thanx for the nice comments.... it really is a cool boat...

this '72 boat is hull #31 under the original build of Elton Cary, it was built late '71 as a '72 model, then Elton sold the company in 73'ish to some northern investors, and i'm not really sure how many 28's they built after the sale time frame. Elton's crew built them one at a time with a smaller crew, to control every aspect of build quality, and it shows. The original hulls were produced from about late '68 to '73 so i'm told. I thought they were started 1970ish myself... this is probably the nicest example remaining that I know of. I do KNOW I haven't seen one this nice in at least 30+ years. The original owner had it for 35 years, thats a long time attachment. It originally had 440 Chryslers, it was repowered in late 1992 with 454 Crusader FWC engines that have less than 100 hours since then... It has a very interesting internal lifting sling arrangement as it was kept in an enclosed boathouse. They were mostly built for local wealthy men, as a means of island hopping. They were prestige *symbols of success* in their day. You had to know Elton or really be *somebody* to get one of his boats, as volume was limited. They did NOT skimp on materials whatsoever. It is VERY well thought out, in little innuendo's here and there. Everything has a specific purpose, style, and function. No bling here. It still retains the original Ritchie Constellation offshore compass on a teak mount. It's never had bottom paint. It's a real solid cruiser. You will NOT break this boat.

It looks as if it is a slightly widened 28 Donzi with it's own styled deck, as it is 9'10" beam, and 27'10' long. It is trailerable... it weighs 9,600# full fuel and water, and the hull bottom has a slight rocker to it. The hull drain is thoughtfully midships in the hull very center, very smart actually, as with a rocker hull the water is always centered in the hull, where the middle bilge pump is. The ENTIRE transom is fiberglass, no wood... and VERY thick. It is a straight drive inboard with 1.5 B/W gears. I don't think it's ever been grounded or beached whatsoever, the hull is PERFECT, no flaws or scratches.

I have been asked several times recently if I would sell it, and the answer is yes, I guess I would. It is a VERY rare specimen in incredible condition for it's age. The price is a fair 55k w/trailer or 48k w/o trailer. I will deliver for $1.50 mile up to 1,500 miles.

I will take more pic's tomorrow of the cockpit and running angles.

I don't think $55k is fair. I think it's a give-away price. That's a rare collectible in mint condition, priceless. Can you tell that I love it?

BUIZILLA

I think it's a giveaway price too, I guess I should price it in the 70's or 80's, it CANNOT be duplicated on this planet...

So with that thought in mind, i'll trade it even for a new(er) ZXO w/6.2's...

this is a beautiful boat--you indicated it is a widen 28 donzi--but the donzi has beam of 10' 6"

can you advise the sea trial #'s for this boat?

what trans ratio and props are you turning?

wot speed and gph
cruise speed and gph

Falon you can find most of what you wish to know in the link below, the fuel consuption at cruise should be in the range od 16-18gph depending on sea conditions. Now Jim that was an educated guess!!!!!

Did Cary build these with outdrives? There is a boat w-twin mercruisers in a storage yard near me and the hull looks just like this one from what I can see of it.

I am pretty positive that none were built with outdrives by the original Cary family, not sure about the successor owners after 1973 though...

at 3400 rpm it runs 35-36 mph at about 11 gal/hr per engine, just a tad over 3 mpg, which isn't bad at all...

WOT is about 43.5 mph at 4350 rpm with 16x20.5 props and 1.5-1 BW tranny's, using Federal DJX props, I think using 17x20's would pick up the cruise to about 38 mph and WOT at 44 mph, maybe 45...

John, the 19's were designed by Jim Cary, Elton's son.... there were several in our area at the time.

Very different & interresting. If someone wants to stand out in a crowd. This is it. High performance to fisherman would love this boat.

I worked for Holman Moody from 68-70, and remember working on a couple 28 Cary's..These were single engine with side console steering, and about 6-8 feet wide..I think they both had 427 Fords in them with Webers or FI..one belonged to Jim Kimberly, and one belonged to Buck Fulp..they were both pretty neat rigs..They sent me to Charlotte to learn about Tecalemit Jackson fuel inj systems..One of those boats may have had this system..The fuel feed was very similar to what became Bosch CIS, only without the air flow meter. Fuel flow was a function based on throttle position..
