I'm in the process of redoing my exhaust and tail pipes on my '96 22 classic w/ Bravo outdrive and the manufacturer of the new pipes wants to know the vertcal distance from the center of the crankshaft to the center of the existing factory located through hull exhaust. Short of removing the outdrive and putting an alignment type bar in or straight edge, does anyone know an easier way, or is there a standard dimension on this factory configuration? If I can't find an easy way the drive comes off tomorrow.

Remove the drive, that's easy, then the measurement is right there . . best to be sure and correct.

Great diagram.. but my horizontal measurement between pipes is 27 9/16" The 12.25 vertical dimension looks about right, but that's the critical one I need. I have a 454 block...maybe different than the drawing? If I'm not 100% sure off she comes.

Thanks everyone.

Jeff,
What exaust brand? I have a 96' 22 also, last spring I pulled the stock exaust and replaced with a Gil/Mercury Performance set up but the riser did not clear the hatch so I had to cut about an inch off by the flange to the manifold and have it re welded which was a little tricky with the water jackets. But everything else lined up with the existing tail pipe location. ( I wouldnt have bothered with the fabrication but I got the exaust used for $600) Long and short, I'd watch out for the height clearance.

Good luck, MM

Mine are 27-1/2 to 28"

The diagram reflects the chine of a 22C and not an 18

I don't know about from the crank centerline, but from the bottom bolt hole on the heads to the hatch you have a little over 17.5 inches. My Dana exhaust barely clears.

Can't you just tell it is stock Merc width an hieght, I would bet my bottom $ that it came with stock iron. The Merc site may a diagram!

Will replace with CMI sport tubes... I pulled the outdrive, stuck a pipe in that fit fairly snug and came up with 12 11/32 " on the left pipe and 12 15/32 " on the right pipe, from the center of crank. Pretty close to the 12.25" indicated in the drawing. It's a good feeling pulling off the cast iron boat anchor exhaust. I did the same on my 16 and was pleased with the results.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. This is such a great site and great people!
