There are many single prop Volvos handling big HP, I feel the 290 will do fine for your app if not flogged to death. The big killer with any drive is hammer down hole shots, the Volvo drives have a leg up on all others as they circulate the drive oil to keep the op temp in a good range.

I read an article in the last 6 months, 3 identicle boats
one 454 one 350 one yaminar diesel -- I was surprised-- I think the
350 was 250 hp. yam 300 454. i forget--but--here what's
important. Contrary to my analysis, the diesel should have
(I think) come on top----nope----the yam. was a dog
off the line; poor top speed, the 350 burned allmost as much
fuel as the 454 and didn't compare, to the 454 in acceleration
or top speed---these were professional testers---I was very
surprised and dissapointed--I was thinking of a dual venture;
where the diesel did shine was mid range, fuel economy, about
half of, I think it was the BB.
I believe the better engine, whould be the gm 6.5 T.
and please, no one call this a car engine, or the 6.2 for
that matter!--yaminar l2 thou.--gm. 6.5T $l5 hundred,
and gizillions of parts, or engines available. ken

So joel, you have a Donzi Doral! very good!
Well you have 1 of a very few boats, so avoid major
changes--that's {where is the number sign?) well
that's number one. I like those 4 stroke O/Bs,
if you have either a light boat or 3 or 4 motors---
If you notice, the outboards have small props,
in comparison to stern drives (diameter that is)
A doral is very heavy and I like that, for ride comfort
--but you need major tork, to get her on plane, and
and a small dia. prop, (doesn't matter what pitch it
is) will just sit there and spin, like narrow tires on
a SS 396 Chevelle, although in 20 minutes or so
when you get on plane it would work ok but still not
as good as a, say l5 / 21 regular aluminum cupped
prop (I like aluminum)--on a stern drive, Preferably
Volvo (I like Volvo), no drive shower required!!
If I had to have just one drive it would be that
supercharged Merc. (yes mercury)--but only if I had
a rich uncle willing to buy it--Im gessing--60 thou.
2 nice 350s (no fuel injection) or computers (save
possibly a module in the distributer--and there are
other reasons for a Donzi Doral. I also like what
one of the members puts at the end of his posts--
(something like--he would rather have a less
expensive boat and a basket full of money than a
expensive boat--tied to the Bank!) good day -ken-
