Hello Everybody,

I will change my 454 mag with a 500EFI (470hp).
Do you think the hull of a 1988 donzi 22 is strong enought?
A lot of expert told me that a 502 was better than a 496HO (425hp). But usely a 502 is more powerfull too and I don't want to break anything in the hull.

Thanks in advance.

[QUOTE=Alexandre;401956]Hello Everybody.
Do you think the hull of a 1988 donzi 22 is strong enough?

Depends on the condition of the hull...
I suggest having someone knowledgeable check stringers, transom for rot. Inspect the bottom for stress cracks and damage.

The increased power will put more stress on the hull. Then the weakest links will fail.

Safety is foremost!

Good luck!

As recommended in the previous post; inspect the hull. If its structurally good, there shouldn't be a problem. There are quite a few individuals running more HP than 470 in there 22's currently. In many cases they have been doing it for a long time. In my case, I will start my 20th year with my 22 having way more that stock HP.

Don't want to side track too much here but does anyone know the torque ratings on the 500 EFI and 525 EFI?

I'd add some beef to the hull if you can before you put it in there. It'll hold up fine for a little while but it's gonna eventually stress the back of the boat. My 02' w/500EFI has 2" thick stringers in the back, a fully cored transom and is currently getting Donzi's between the stringer enhancements.

I'm not aware of any hull or stringer problems that Dr Dan has with the same engine.

Doc mentioned awhile back that his transverses off the forward engine compartment bulkhead were loose but would be taken care of this winter. Mine was coming loose in the same spot, I doubled the stringers to just past mid ship and added 3 additional transverses, rebuilt the transom plus a few other things to stiffen it up real good.

Gee I don't know. My 1981 Criterion has over 650 hp and I don't have any problems. I do have hydraulic steering and a TRS outdrive(AKA the brick). there have been several engine swaps that you are attempting. You must be puttinh in a HP500 in your boat with that HP. Welcome and good luck.

Just completed four seasons with the donor blue motor or about 140 hours.

I keep a close eye on the bilge.

No issues.

Do it again? In a heart beat.
