thanx falcon do you think that is with engines my boat has twin 454s

dry weight would include motors--probably small blocks which were standard equipment----although i am suspect of the listed weight---i have no reason why they would under estimate the weight---but, it seems light--especially after speaking to people that say how thick the hull was made.

What's the beam on a 28 Sportsman? It's a great lookin' boat.

its 10 beam has 108 sq ft cockpit hope to repower it with 315hp yanmar diesel s should cruise at 35 knots and get 2 miles to the gallon only problem is the cost of the project i estimate it at 30 thousand if i do most of the work

are you installing twins or a single?---i don't think you will get those speeds with a single

joel mcqueen
02-10-2007, 08:53 AM
yes twin 315 hp yanmars it has twin 454s now with v drives they put out 330 hp with less torque so i hope the yanmars will get her up to 35 or 40 knots like the 454s do

falcon
02-12-2007, 08:01 AM
will you use the v-drive or straight inboards?

joel mcqueen
02-12-2007, 08:08 AM
ill use the v drives they have drive shaft between the v drive and trans mission so any engine i install only need to modify the drive shaft

very interested in your project--will you keep the original struts? why i am asking is that they really would not allow for a larger diameter prop to take advantage of all that torque--most 28's with original power have prop diameters of 14-17" and running 1:1 transmissions.

i know quite a few 31 bertrams that were repowered with yannies and are running props of 19-20" and running 1..5:1 or 2:1 transmissions.

if you keep the small diameter props you will have to go with a very high pitch --maybe 26-27" and your idle speed will be very fast and hard to handle in docking and 5mph zones.

cool send me your phone number falcon i need all the input i can get the torque is not that much greater than the 454s in her now yanmar says 6lp has 525 ft lbs 454 says 447 ft lbs i guess it more than i think i can change struts what ever is need been kind of disapointed in fuel consumption with diesel was hoping for better than 8 gals per hour per engine how is fuel use in your freinds bert 31s looking to repower boat more for the range than top speed would like to cruise at 35 knots she does that now with 454s but burns to much fuel

falcon

not sure what 454's you are running now--but standard motors usually have about 350-375lbs of torque----go to http://bertram31.com/newbb/---and ask about yannie repowers---should get some good feedback---

If your installing Yanmars call Ahdib Mastry at Mastry engine service in St petersburg Fl. They are one of the largest repower centers around and have vast knowledge for this type of application.

I spin 18x20 on my 28 Cary which is basically a 28 Donzi hull, I just repropped to 17x19, with some luck it'll be in the water this Saturday for the run...

what motors do you have in your cary? what type of performance did you get with original props? does your boat have a tower?

I have twin 454-320 Crusader's w/ 1.5 BW gears

with 18x20 medium cupped Federal wheels, it only turns 3900 rpm @ 42.3 mph, full fuel and 2 souls... 3250 rpm was 36.5mph loaded up, tad overwheeled IMO...

this thing IS heavy, no tower, bimini was up, it's a HUGE bimini...

I am counting on the 17x19's to get me 4400 rpm, and maybe 4-5 more mph...

the way it literally jumped on plane with the 18x20's, I may be able to swing 16x21's, and get even more speed out of it...

if I can cruise at 3300 @ 38 mph i'll be very happy

my drawings say this is a 15* shaft angle, but I thought they were 10*

the info I got from a Federal/Michigan engineer was that the prop blade clearance to the hull should be no less than 10% of the diameter of the blade itself (2"), and preferably no more than 20% (3 1/2"), with the 18's I had 2 1/2 " clearance, with the 17's I should have 3".

JH,

How much does the cary weigh--those are pretty impressive #'s --do you have and GPH #'s?

BUIZILLA

not sure on weight, we ARE going to weigh it b4 it hits the water next time out... we know the trailer weighs exactly 1940#.... original Cary lit' says 7950# dry weight, fuzzy and I figure we were about 10,000# hull/soul/gear weight the first day we did the GPS numbers.

hey buzzilla so you say the 67 28 donzi is the cary hull 28 and that would mean 28 blackifn as well all same hull i had a old 28 cary. i thought they hulls looked a lot alike donzi seems to have a sharper entry at bow my old 28 cary had twin 351 fords straight inboard with engine amid ship with engine boxes the donzi has engines in stern under deck . with no engine boxes which give more cokpit space all of these 28 baots are bad ass open water hulls cary made a 29 with less beam ive only seen one but it was a runner i plan to repower this donzi hopefuly with yanmar 315 hp yanmars ill let you all know how it goes keep us in formed on your 28

dunno about the 28 Blackfin, but the 28 Performer looks suspiciously familiar...

falcon
02-15-2007, 09:50 AM
looking at my files---i found test report (Boating Nov. 1980) for a blackfin 28 with 3208Ts-235HP---top speed was 43.8 MPH---weight 9500lbs--don't know if that was dry .

also length was 27' 11" beam 9'10"

donzi sportsman length was 28' beam 10' 6"

although i have read that the cary and donzi hulls were the same---i don't think they are. i do believe that the 28 performer is the same hull as the donzi.

falcon

also blackfin did buy the cary molds and produced the 28 and 32 in the late 70's

mine is 27' 11" and 9' 10" beam, I am positive of that, I measured it myself...
