Do you use a 2" or 2 5/16"? Reason I ask is I currently use a 2 5/16 and feel safer with the larger, but I hate the coupler on the trailer. I have another trailer with a 2" coupler that I like better and I've been thinking about swapping. Am I safe with a 2"? I don't want to use something that is marginal.

2 inch is fine, 2-5/16 is over kill.

Bigger balls are usually better but in this case go with the 2 inch. :eek!:

Speaking of overkill, the single axle Loadmaster trailer under my 16 was spec'd with a 2" ball and coupler. <shrug>

Look on the top of the ball. Some 2" are rated at 3500#, most at 5000#, and I've seen 2# rated at 8000#. I'd go with at least a 5000 for a 22.

Speaking of overkill, the trailer I have the Minx on has a 2 5/16's coupler that rated at 20,000 pounds.

I checked my balls. The're big enough, but of course, that's my opinion. :)

The 2" coupler and ball are both rated for 6500# so looks as if I'll go with that. Thanks

Same for me...... mine are over 50 years old!!!!!! Guess that makes 'em antiques!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to a nice doctor and his two snips, they're "for decorative use only!" :bonk:

Same for me...... mine are over 50 years old!!!!!! Guess that makes 'em antiques!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've heard of people using their balls too long and they shear off at the base. 50yrs on the same ones...better be careful. :rlol:

Don't forget to lubricate your balls before hooking up. Will reduce wear and damage to the suface.

This thread has really gone downhill... With bigger balls you can drive more aggressively...harder and faster. They alos hold up better under extreme useage. Also make sure you have the right receiver for your balls and that the shaft size matches the hole or it will get sloppy and could eventually fall out.

I picked up a hitch and 2 5/6" ball off the road. If anyone wants it they can have it, just pay shipping.

George, are you going to be around your shop tomorrow? If it's not raining, I might go help Jim and his dad swap trailers, and maybe I could drop off Jerry's hatch at your place.

Yep, I'll be around. Jim knows where my new shop is.
Scott, I'll give the hitch and ball to Jim.
