You've been probably following this on the news.

Two things killed James Kim.

1. Using a mapping system with out knowing the local conditions. I've traveled 23 the whole way from Gold Beach to Grant's Pass. The road should have been closed in the fall. Its not really a road. Its a path is some places.

2. Doing the usual thing in an area where the usual thing isn't going to work.
The rogue valley can not be walked out of just by going to the drainage and following the valley out. Its too steep and the trail is on the wrong side from 23. The news is saying he was really close to finding help. No, he wasn't. The decsion to follow the valleys to the river, which works almost everywhere else, sealed his fate. The road IS the only way out.

If he had just walked the road back, he would be alive.
If you are stuck in Oregon, follow the road back.
