Nice... Reminds me of the 24 Pantera's and 27 Magnums that had 500-525 Merc's in 'em and ran like the wind.

Kind of like IROC for the boat poor of racing.

This would be very cool. Now, how do we keep OSS and SBI hands off of this Class and still promote it?

$15-20,000 first prize. I think entrance fees are going to be out of the grass roots budgets....Ed

Maybe I'm missing something here. What exactly is this sanctioning body offering that isn't available in Offshore Factory class racing already?
Aren't the Factory classes running sealed engine & drive packages already? Where's the savings? Have the Factory classes succummed to the creeping capsule disease?
I haven't followed offshore racing that closely. Could someone please enlighten me?

I wish the Inboard Divsion would offer a sealed engine factory class for flatbottoms. THAT would bring me back into racing for sure. I'm not really looking forward to returning to "wallet racing".

THROTTLES PLEASE :D

Lenny, I figured we would just wire tie the throttle wide open......that way we would have no excuses not to place.:eek!: :eek!: :eek!:

On a side note, I'm sure Donzi could be convinced build a "light lay-up" hull.

In... Heidi's been trying to get rid of me for years anyways :eek!: :eek!:

but the difference would probably be that Jill would want to drive. With Lenny on the throttles, the two would be the lightest team on the circut!

Of course, that leaves me on the docks playing launch hand duty, which pegs the sucko-meter.

My 500 still has the factory seals too. Maybe just a bit of "freshening" for the ole dependable donor motor...

Hmmmm.

Donzi built purpose built F1 boats I raced next to one in Mentor Ohio this summer until both boys were ejected. It looked like sycronised ragdoll toss. I am running a 29 Fountain F1 with 500 efi not that I am sold on the boat but it was all I could find used when I decided to go racing. I will be there with OPA and ORL if factory class comes to light. :crossfing

I'm curious to know what you guys pay for the spec engines you run in Factory Offshore racing. Are they rev-limited? How much running time do you expect to get from an engine before you change it?

I'd love it if APBA (or someone) had a spec engine class for inboard sprint racing. I'd kill for a class where driving skills actually mattered, and the bastard with the fattest wallet wasn't almost always the automatic winner.

That's an interesting question. Right now, the answer is no and I'll tell you why I think that is. That type of hull and drive package at that length range is kind of stuck in the middle of two camps.

They wouldn't really stand much chance in sprint style circle racing, like the 5 mile heat format that the inboard division runs. They would flounder in the turns against hulls (flat bottom or semi-V bottom) with v-drives and turning fins. APBA tried a stern drive v-bottom (OMC Cobra Grand Prix) class back in the '80s but the class never caught on.

They're too short for ocean racing when the wind kicks up. The entry level class in offshore these days starts (correct me if I'm wrong here, guys) at about 27'. There used to be an entry level class for 21' outboards (I forgot what they used to call it) where Progressions, Challengers, Superboats, and the like did very well, but it too kind of dissappeared.

In answer to your question, yes there could be, but it would have to come from a grass roots movement in a format that doesn't exist with the current framework of the various racing sanctioning bodies.
Personally, I'd like to see a revival of long distance marathons like the Albany to NYC Marathon, or the Winnebagoland Outboard Marathon that the kneeldown boats used to run. The 18' and 22' Donzis would make a good class for such an event.

They are mercury racing 500 EFI damn near bullet proof for these one hour races. My ecm is limited at 5300 mefi 4 the mefi3 was missing when i bought the boat so we changed the valve springs and raced 5 of the 7 races this summer with no mechanical issues. I can't imagine this engine has more than 50 to 60 hrs. on it.
